Fresh O

P052809SA-0066

Official White House Photo by Samantha Appleton

Taken in late May, the photo above shows the first lady meeting the granddaughter of White House florist Nancy Clark.

Mrs. O is dressed in an orange skirt and cardigan by the label Hanii Y. The double layer cardigan is a different version of the cardigan Mrs. O wore on her recent cover of Essence. We love the bright, burst of citrus hues here.

Those are two of my favorite colors, so I think I like.

Sweet! Mrs O is really into babies isn't she?! I've noticed this before, she just lights up. It's so cute.

(Ten years ago I was so anti cute I would have snarled at this photo. Just goes to show, you can progress without therapy! LOL!)

LOVING the bright apricot outfit. What light and colour!

Yes, she loves her some babies!!! And I love her in such bright colors. I bought an fall-like orange cardigan, which I love, just last year. That was a random color for me to buy, but it caught my eye.

I like how she gives her hair a break and wears it back when she's not doing anything too fancy or official. To me, that shows that she really takes care of herself and doesn't overdo it with chemicals and products on her hair more than she has to.

For my clarification, is that TBG?

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12:34 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

Also, is anyone else loving the new Mrs. O logo? I think it's great!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12:35 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

Nope, not TBG. And I do love the logo

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12:40 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

This is a lot of orange for Mrs. O. A bit too much for my taste. I can see she has a peek of yellow though. It'd probably show up better from the front. Very spring-like colours. Bright colours almost always work in her favor though.

TBG = Tall Bald Guy

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 1:09 PM | Registered Commentermom2sam

LOL. TBG is way taller and way more serious. I can't imagine him crooning at a baby!

(I am the same as Mrs. O about babies, although I way too young to have any any time soon.)

I really like this bright, cheerful outfit. Her looks when she doesn't have public appearances seem to be casual and easy.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 1:27 PM | Registered CommenterJenna

I see the photos today! Yippee!

Orange is not one of my favorite colors, although it looks great on Mrs. O. Still, it's a lot of orange. I'm a sucker for babies, just like Mrs. O. Sweet photo.

She does like babies! She also was talking baby talk to Bo on the NBC News special.

Hello everyone!
Why has this ensemble slipped by without being mentioned?

Very cute pic! I'm glad Mrs. O takes the time to appreciate and share in her staff's personal milestones.

One of my few quibbles with her clothes is: too much orange...she does NOT look good in earth tones. Blue undertone shades suit her well.

beautiful colors

Mmmmmmmmm..............

No.

(However, I still LOVE Michelle!)

Good read, thanks Francesca. I don't know why, but that outfit makes me smile. She has such a playfully naughty side to her, and I guess I just have to laugh because she's not afraid to show it in the most creative ways when she dresses.

Bright colors always seem to make her light up. So do children. :)

IVA, you are still so sweet!
The Timesonline article was indeed interesting. It is afterall The Times of London - a very rightist Rupert Murdoch owned publication...

I think the color is too intense...

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 3:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterPalGirl2008

Although orange isn't one of my favorite colors, I do love it on Mrs. O - she seems to be bringing a much needed breath of fresh air to the White House. Sorry, I prefer the original Mrs. O logo, but I'll get to used to it I'm sure. Love the site!!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 3:44 PM | Registered CommenterPaula

SD - are you kidding? She looks amazing in orange! It's not a color a lot of people can wear. She wears it well!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 4:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterCanyongal

I too feel that the colors are very intense, especially from the side. The splash of yellow I think tones it down better and I wish I could view the outfit head on. If more of the yellow were showing from the front, it would look a little less intense. Either way, she looks cute and very happy----like a cheery burst of sherbert!

Girls and MO went to Harry Potter set and to see Lion King last night. There are pics of them in the car and MO getting out the SUV. Here is the article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1191620/First-Lady-flamboyance-Michelle

Ok, I will go out on a limb. I checked out the Times UK above-referenced article. I thought the Westminster Abbey outfit was hideous and inappropriate for a sacred space visit. Preface my comment with the fact that the Obamas' are a family to be admired and I love to hear about Mrs. Obama. I try not to judge people by what they wear but we all have our opinions. 99% of the time I love her look simply because I like what I see and how I perceive her as a human.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 4:42 PM | Registered Commenteramy

Since I hail from the land of perpetual summers, I have no quarrel with the sunny ensemble. Absolutely love it!

The Abbey outfit on the other hand....
They say that when the US sneezes, we here in JA catch a cold. Dear Lord, let it not be THIS particular cold.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 4:51 PM | Registered Commentermom2sam

Kat,
Thank you for posting that link!
Haven't seen that outfit anywhere else!
I would have loved it more if she hadn't worn those gray pants.
It would have been quite lovely with a brightly colored pants.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 4:53 PM | Registered CommenterLeah D

Oh, dear. That outfit she wore to Westminster Abbey is truly hideous.
I understand that Mrs. Obama has always dressed for herself--a laudable and confident undertaking. But, I also think that now, as First Lady, she could be a little more sensitive to the fact that she now represents not only herself and her family, but she represents all of us. That multicolored, tiered, frothy tee shirt/yellow cardigan thing just looks wrong, wrong, wrong in that setting. How many of us here on this board would actually wear that monstrosity to a historic and hallowed church?

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 4:59 PM | Registered CommenterNancy

Thanks Nancy for your succinct spot-on comments. Right or wrong, I don't think the first family is ever really off-duty, just my humble opinion. And so, I would not wear that to a sacred space.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 5:38 PM | Registered Commenteramy

The orange looks great on her dark skin; and the yellow is a nice touch.

I prefer the old logo.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 6:21 PM | Registered Commentermissann

Everybody cannot pull off bright colors and Michelle Obama certainly can! Her skin color is perfect for this tangerine orange color. And I also love the fact that she CAN pull her hair back and still look chic. Kudos to Mrs. O and also to you Mrs T on the new website design!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 7:00 PM | Registered CommenterVeevee

The first lady looks absolutely divine! I bet the heavens remain positively enchanted by this stunning woman with such exquisite taste and presence.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 8:17 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

Hmm, I'm still trying to figure out how a conservatively dressed woman who is always articulate, personable and respectful in addition to exuding happiness, strength and vitality can somehow not represent the US well b/c certain individuals disagree with her fashion choices? That's odd. The majority of Americans obviously felt she would represent the US well or they wouldn't have voted her husband into the highest office in the land.

I wonder if this pic was at Nancy's retirement party? After 30 years of service she will be leaving her post. ABC news had a great article about her.

Ohhh well said Bianca!

I'd like to add - I've seen an awful lot of tourists in various locations in my home city of London over the last 23 years. I've seen them shuffling around the Abbey listening to loud music on Walkman's and iPods, wearing ripped jeans falling off their backsides, ripped Tshirts, practically yelling at each other over a gap of a foot. I've seen girls dressed in what I can only describe as fancy dress for a hookers convention. Bra straps hanging out, skirts so short they must have been a belt originally, jeans showing everything bar pubic hair. Some of them were American, some weren't.

Now, compare if you will, Ms O and her family. Clean, neat, respectfully dressed. A mum out with her daughters and mother. Bright colours for a vacation. Well behaved, sweet, polite.

It's a no-brainer.

Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 8:55 AM | Unregistered CommenterPosh Tater

Without bothering to find the exact poster on this thread who made the comment, I must say that I find it offensive that Mrs. O would be chastised for not dressing her girls up better, or however the poster phrased the remark.

The girls look fine, they are on vacation, they are exploring the city, they are climbing stairs, running around, and doing kid things. Leave their mother and them alone about the kids' clothes. Really.

Thanks, Posh Tater.

Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 12:08 PM | Registered Commenterbianca

Y'welcome Bianca. Oh Bevi it was on the Westminster Abbey thread. A comment beneath contempt. They girls look great, they have always looked great, I suspect they will always look great.

Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 12:31 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

I was told if you don't have something nice to say then keep it unsaid. I would like to see all message boards more tolerant of differing opinions. I have not read anything I find contemptible or hateful, simply the opinions. Our country would in my opinion be so much better off if we gained a new tolerance and beyond for differing opinions.

Thanks.

Well-put Posh Tater, but are they really listening? Do they really want to have honest conversations? Not really...

They only seek "tolerance" and "differing" opinions when they can control the narrative, slanting it to sneak in their insulting digs at Mrs O; and only when their categorical pronouncements reign supreme and everyone including the usually polite posters are shamed into offering periodic slams at Mrs O, just so as not to be seen as "gushing", "blinded" and "not objective".

Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 10:18 PM | Registered Commenteramy

Our indefatigable Eleroy! Preach on!

We need more people like you who call the crap out when they see it -
The pussyfooting around folks who are brazen in their blatant disrespect of Michelle Obama must stop.

It gets even worse when they insist that the insults are simply differing opinions on fashion and so must be allowed to flourish; (they even go as far as quoting Michelle to try to temper objections to their undercover nastiness!)

Like someone peeing on you trying to convince you it's raining, these people really think we fell off a turnip truck!

Friday, June 12, 2009 at 2:00 AM | Registered CommenterCamille

Eleroy... LOL - I have never been shamed into joining in. If I like an outfit I like it. If I don't, I don't. No spitting or hissing required. No, they don't want a reasonable conversation. But I'm not going to pretend I didn't notice either! That's how bad behaviour becomes accepted. So you have to call it out, every time.

As Camille says, it gets even sillier when they say the rest of us just blindly worship Mrs O. Um, I don't worship Michelle. I don't worship anything! But I don't see why I should be nasty, just for kicks. If I realised my daily fun was being horrible about being someone else, I'd be booking an appointment with a counsellor and working out what was missing in my life.
