Mrs. O Lunches with Nancy Reagan

P060309SA-0498Official White House Photo by Samantha Appleton

Mrs. O lunched with former First Lady Nancy Reagan today. The lunch came after President Mr. O signed a bill creating the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission, which will honor the 100th anniversary, in 2011, of the late president’s birth.

Mrs. O has fully embraced a summer palette, wearing a striped T-shirt and floral cardigan from Gap (on sale for $24.99!), and white textured pencil skirt. A single strand of pearls and diamond bangles accessorized the look.

Update: Mrs. O wears a Michael Kors, Spring 2009, white lacquered boucle pencil skirt.

amazing! how lovely...

They look great. The pencil skirt reminds me of the J crew one she wore in London. I think it's the same.

I think you are right, MImi, If I remember correctly, the skirt came in white as well.

This is an adorable photo. Mrs. O seems genuinely thrilled to be hosting Mrs. Reagan.

I agree that the cut is similar. If you look at the image at full scale though (on Flickr), you can see that the material is a textured tweed, not the metallic dots. Wouldn't be surprised if it's J.Crew though!

Cute! And I'm glad to see Nancy Reagan looking well. There have been some books released not terribly long ago (maybe within the last five or so years) of letters by Ronald Reagan, and it's clear that he and Nancy had a very loving relationship.

I'm not crazy about this stripe/flower combo. but I do think she wears these colors well.

Love. Love. Lovelovelove! So creative with the mix of patterns - I am feeling so inspired!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 6:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterSandy

I love love love love the skirt! And I love the overall color of the cardigan and shirt. However, I just personally have never liked horizontal stripes at all; it scares me---okay don't ask---LOL! (Some people are scared of the dark and spiders...horizontal stripes make me run for the hills. But obviously, Mrs. O doesn't share my view and boldly wears it with pride, and she looks overall just lovely. The lunch I bet was great. Mrs. Reagan, the room and setting look very nice.

I was just signing on to tell you all they are running this story on CNN. They both look lovely...might have to run to Gap tomorrow!

Mrs. O used the Reagan China for lunch. Very nice touch!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn#1

Is the skirt the "eyelet pencil skirt" in "ivory" from JCrew?

Mrs. O looks young and "Summery" in this outfit!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterSailorsgirl

I think Mrs. O looks lovely. I expect it's the same outfit she wore to the graduation she spoke at earlier today -- perhaps dressed down a bit for the high-school kids she addressed. Mrs. Reagan looks very good, too.

I'm glad that President and Mrs. O are hosting Mrs. Reagan in such a special way. Mrs. R was disappointed that she had not been invited to the signing of the stem-cell bill shortly after Mr. O took office. She felt that her presence could have furthered the cause. The White House has said that it was not an intentional omission, but merely an oversight.

I want to post a link to a very short video of Mrs. Reagan's remarks at the unveiling of the very impressive statue of her husband. It was very touching.

It's great to see these two ladies together, and how sweet of Mrs. O. to use the Reagan china. I do think a solid rose-colored top would have looked better with the beautiful sweater.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I dare say those diamond bangles go with everything! ;)

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:10 PM | Unregistered Commenterfoo

uhmmmm I love Mrs. O to death, but this is one UGLY cardigan. lol...and the T-shirt?? Not with this beautiful skirt. As always though, her smile is her greatest accessory.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterZile

Mrs. O looks great...as usual! I love how she's coordinating within the same color family but not all matchy matchy with her prints. She definitely knows how to mix things up and I love it! I also love the fact that she's invited Mrs. Reagan to The White House. Mrs. Carter has also been. I really wish she would host a "First Ladies Luncheon" with all the living First Ladies. I think that event would be such a powerful homage to all of their lives and work. Remember! I said it first!!!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs C - Mrs O's Twin!

I love that she wore a typically "sporty" striped t-shirt and matching printed cardigan to a "ladies who lunch" sort of occasion, and from the GAP nonetheless! Even if you don't love the outfit you have to commend her on her creativity and willingness to experiment. It's what makes her so fun to watch. I'm telling you, this woman is the SJP of first ladies. I love it!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterAri

Yeahhhhhhhhh, from the gap!!!!!!! I am buying the cardigan

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterMimi

My previous comment went into moderation because I linked to Mrs. R's remarks at the unveiling of the statue of her husband.

I think Mrs. O has on what she wore to the high-school graduation she spoke at earlier, and that she perhaps wore this stripped-floral combo for the young people there.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterWillow

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh Thanks Mrs T for the links. I got the floral cardigan, can't wait to wear it...

Sorry Guys, I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!Yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterMimi

I like this outfit. 4 stars out of 5. I'd have preferred a solid top over the stripes with the floral cardigan, but oh well.

I wonder if the skirt is from J. Crew, because it reminds me of the pencil skirt outfit that she wore to meet with British First Lady Sarah Brown?

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterMara

Michelle looks great..again! I love how she's not afraid to mix patterns and know that it all works together. Now THAT's confidence! Also, her willingness to incorporate the high end designer (MOSCHINO, LANVIN, AZZADINE) with the consumer friendly (GAP, JCREW, TALBOTS) is wonderful! I hope one day, she brings all theliving former First Ladies to the White House for a "First Ladies Tea!" How powerful would that be?! Remember! I said it first!

so simple yet so elegant, that's mrs.o.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:47 PM | Unregistered Commentergemma

I LOVE everything except the striped T. It makes the top half a little too busy for my taste; I'd have preferred a solid color. But it's great to see her looking so summery!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterMs. G

The combo of the shirt and cardigan is so interestingly weird that it works completely. It looks elegant, yet relaxed, and the two of them look so comfortable and happy!

I'm happy for Nancy Reagan, it looks like she had a wonderful time in D.C. honoring her hubby and getting some very sincere face-time with the Obamas.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

The first thing I thought when I saw this sweater combo was that Mrs. O wore it because it matched the Reagan china. A very Nancy Reagan kind of touch, and one Mrs. R probably would have appreciated (and thought of herself).

I'm looking forward to Part II of the Obama White House tonight, though I have to say I was wiped out and a little blue after watching the first part. I am so glad to have this man as president in these times, but the wear and tear already shows on him. (Actually, I thought they both looked worn down when they came back from their date in NYC.) They are both doing such a fabulous job, but it's got to be overwhelming at times.

That said, I am so glad to have them out there for our country. I was a Hillary supporter early on and heartbroken when she lost. But I came around quickly to Obama, and I am more convinced than ever that he is the right person at the right time for this world. And I love that his wife is not only smart, but incredibly fun to watch. She's more interesting every day.

While looking for this skirt on the Jcrew site, I came across an awesome silk pleated skirt that's reminiscent of the pleated, full dresses and skirts that Mrs. O has worn. It's silk and it's on sale from $250 to $79 now.

I had to get it.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

I bought this Gap cardi (with beige flowers) a few weeks ago! Love it!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterInHerFashion

I love this outfit. Although, I was a little put off by the stripes/flowers combo, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It just shows what a bold risk taker our First Lady is.

Also, I loved her speech to the kids today. She informed them that they were "more than ready", which I think is a great point to convey because at that point in your life, you are still a child, but you are about to be a grown up. And as much as you think you are grown at those times, it is hard to leave mommy and daddy and live on your own and make your own choices.
Kudos to our First Lady for being the smart & stylish woman she is.

P.S. Can't wait to see her on NBC tonight!!

@ OperaFanatic - I agree....I was pooped watching them run around, and you can tell they get tired, but they keep on going. I'm glad that they are going to spend the weekend together in Paris, with his 3 girls spending a few extra days after Mr. O heads back to D.C.

I really do believe he's the right person to be president, at this particular time too, but I really believe Hillary is shining in her role as SOS. That new book "Renegade" by Richard Wolffe apparently mentions that during the primaries, Obama wanted her to be his SOS...he wanted her to be "his face to the world." I think that's just awesome. Apparently they will be together in Egypt touring a mosque, as well as the pyramids and other important landmarks. I hope they have a little fun.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

I'm going to be honest about todays look on Michelle and say it looks sort of messy and odd. The sweater looks to small and the shirt underneath it appears like something you'd wear working around your home or at the gym. As for the skirt it's the same one she used while in London and would have looked much better if she had worn the same top she did with it as she had done before.
I personally, think Michelle doesn't care what people think of her fashion and I find that the most charming thing about her.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterTia

I have the stripped Gap shirt is blue. The fabric is nice and light. Mrs O must have it scrunched up because its a long shirt

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterDee84

IVA, thanks for bringing that up about Hillary as SOS. I intended to say I thought she, too, was the right person in the right job at the right time. I give them both a lot of credit for finding a way to work together.

I'm not sure I agree completely with Tia that MO doesn't care what people think of her fashion, but I did love her remark in the Time article to "wear what you love." I do believe she does that, and lets the chips fall where they may with the critics. I didn't love the date night dress (Janelle: those ruffles are horizontal stripes!), but by gosh, she was wearing something she loved and I give her major points for that.

OH sh*t $24.99...*goes to gap webby to buy that cardy now* love this look. stunning.

OH yeah remember to watch our gorgeous POTUS on the inside the white house show tonight. I love this show, POTUS is so cool and by gosh he looks more gorgeous than ever.

I love all the young people like myself running things in the background. keeps POTUS young I think.

@Nyon - I agree that Mrs. O made a wonderfully encouraging speech to these young graduates. I can't remember where I found a 3-minute video of it, so I can't link to it, as I hoped.

@ Tia - I agree the combo with the shirt and cardigan is odd, but to me, for some reason, it works...I really like it. I don't think I could pull it off, but Mrs. O, in that setting, really does.

@ OperaFanatic - I agree with your assessment of Mrs. O's fashion philosophy. Sorry - can't agree about date night dress...that look was spot on for me. (Smile)

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

Sorry, but the stripes/print don't work for me. Plus, the sweater is too tight-Mrs. O is starting to look the same over and over. Maybe she doesn't care what she is wearing, but if she's supposed to be the "First Lady of Fashion" maybe she should. Whatever..it's just clothes!!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 9:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterCece

I'm not sure about the mix of stripes and florals. But. She chose Mrs. R's favorite color - red. She used the Reagan china. That, my friends, is pure grace and elegance and class. Beautiful.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:04 PM | Unregistered Commentert'other Mrs. O

Michelle looks wonderful. I love the color. Surprisingly, I also love the stripes set against the floral. It works because both patterns are in the same color. White skirts are great for Spring. Mrs. Reagan looks well and I loved the red suit she wore yesterday to the signing.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterRuth Leslie

Michelle looks great and I love this picture of her and Mrs. Reagan! Very, very sweet!

Do the sweater and shirt come in any other colors? They're probably sold out, anyway!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:13 PM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

Can someone point out to me how the sweater is too tight? I guess I thought those little cardigans were supposed to be form fitting...just don't let the button look like it's holding on for dear life.

I may be wearing my cardigans too tight too, because that's how they look on me.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

Not digging the t-shirt and sweater

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterTasha

Very sweet.

(The cardigan pattern looks very similar to a skirt I bought from The Gap!)

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:13 PM | Unregistered Commenterdesertwind

How ironic that Mrs. O wore Gap sale items to lunch with Nancy Reagan. Lol! Mrs. Reagan wore more couture Bob Mackie and Oscar De La Renta than is imaginable. And to think the first lady is given a hard time about her fashion choices....ha!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterStrong

Now this is a bit too casual for me. Let me say that although I consider myself 'old school', I've both embraced and enjoyed many of her current and fresh looks. The skirt and sweater sets worn in Europe had some polish to them but this looks like it was thrown together with no thought. I'm sorry but I expect the polish - she is the First Lady of the United States.
