On the Town in Jasmin Shokrian

Image by Seth Wenig / AP Photo

The first lady was in New York City this weekend, and out on the town to catch the Broadway play 'Memphis'. For her theatre outing, Mrs. O wore a skirt by Jasmin Shokrian, paired with a black top and cardigan, and olive green flats for a hint of Spring color. Very city chic!

The Jasmin Shokrian skirt is a piece we've seen Mrs. O wear once before. Last May, the first lady debuted the skirt for a service event in Washington, D.C., first covered (with a detailed image) here.

Very chic outfit indeed!

This is a very nice article about Mrs. O's jaunt to NYC to catch the play. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2010/03/21/2010-03-21_first_lady_michelle_obama_escapes_health_debate_by_taking_daughters_to_broadways.html

CITY CHIC!

Ahhh... easy does it in this outfit. Glad to see Mrs.O playing truant while her hubby was at home watching the "BIG DEBATE".

Chrystelle, I have been channeling my inner Michelle Obama and I will try and replicate that look as well. It looks very chic, I can see a Parisian lady shopping in St Germain de Pres wearing the same ensemble !!

One thing I admire Michelle for is that she isn't afraid to experiment with her footwear, I would have worn black pumps with the outfit, but there you go. Loving the bag in a big way is it a Celine boogie ?

If ever there was a time to get out of town, this weekend was it. Well done, Mrs. O!

Absolutely, STUNNING! Mrs. Obama is wearing my FAVORITE colors!

Any information on her shoes?

Love this, has anyone seen Memphis? I'm thinking about taking a jaunt via the Chinatown bus to NYC for a day.

Very chic! The cardigan looks textured, very nice. (Actually it could be buttons.)

The President and Mrs. Obama make every effort to keep their children's lives as normal as possible in that Washington DC pressure cooker. Taking the girl's out of town and away from the health care frenzy was so smart. They continue to be wonderful role models.

I wish I understood the green flats. Maybe if there'd been some green in her outfit. Otherwise, it just seems like the wrong choice.

Monday, March 22, 2010 at 3:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterJill

Very smart move Mrs. O, to take the time away from Washington this weekend, as it was pretty ugly; you avoides the protests and debates. A smart woman knows when to take a break and give room.

The green shoes was the completer of this look. NICE, VERY NICE!

This is a great look for any city, anywhere. Can easily be dressed up or down. Ladies, a big bag like the one the FLOTUS is carrying here can take a look like this from day to night: you wear flats or kitten heels for walking around and you carry a pair of crazy hot high heels to switch into for an evening event! Add a "wow" piece of jewelry or a statement necklace and it's evening-ready.

IVA can you re-post the link, it's not working, thanks.

Love the outfit....but would someone please buy our First Lady some shoes. I am sick and tired of flats, flats, flats....the look has become quite flat. A nice pair of strappy heeled sandals or a sexy low platform would have really sent this outfit into orbit. Come on, Mrs. Obama.

@IVA - Thanks for the link regarding Mrs. O-- and company--at the play. I loved the article, and the picture that accompanied it, showing the stack of bracelets on her arm. I have seen her wear other "stacks" before, but I don't recall ever seeing them in black before. The overall look was good, and just right for an afternoon at the Shubert.

I love the green shoes. I never would have thougt of wearing green flats with that outfit but they sure looks good on FLOTUS.

Youthful looking skirt, ideal for the occasion. I love the fact that you can dress it up or down.
Flats look very comfortable and a great choice while out with the girls.

@ Jill - When you wear a pure colour , like Black or White you can harmonise with any other colour, depending on your mood. I do it all the time. A pure black outfit with pink shoes and accessories. A pure black outfit and a green handbag and accessories.
You should try it....just a POP of colour can be very dramatic.

FLOTUS looks absolutely FANTASTIC as usual.
I LOVE the ensemble.
Is it my eyes? Or is the bottom of the skirt somewhat sheer?

Monday, March 22, 2010 at 5:56 PM | Registered Commentertrinisamba

I was planning to wear a black and white dress tomorrow paired with black and white shoes. When I saw the green shoes, I immediately decided to wear MY green shoes, too! Why not?? Fun!

Monday, March 22, 2010 at 6:51 PM | Unregistered Commenterthumper

I'm interested in the hem of the skirt. There is a larger version of this photo on the Huffington Post and it looks like there is a band of a different fabric or maybe a different color? Can anyone tell?

Mrs. T, do you have any ideas about what and whom Mrs. O will wear to the May state dinner? Are there any Mexican-American designers? That Naeem Khan will be hard to top -- one of Mrs. O's best looks ever!

Another site stated that the shoes were gold. Still, a classic and chic look for a mother on the town with her girls.

Over the weekend I attended a wedding where a very chic woman wore green shoes with her black dress.

I just adore olive green shoes. I had a great pair of olive sandals - but my dog chewed them to pieces!

@boazwife - I can't paste it without the same problem. It's an article from NY Daily News, so try and search that way. Sorry.

Monday, March 22, 2010 at 9:32 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

This outfit is fairly monotone, except for her shoes, which were a good choice. I think Mrs. O. could have used a great Carole Tanenbaum pin with this ensemble!

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 3:47 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Bevi - I was at a wedding this weekend, too (in the warm Bay Area) and I wore bottle green shoes. I love those pump and they worked with the setting. My husband is sick of them already, but they've served the past two seasons remarkably well! Next up, the gladiator sandals and shooties.

@ MI Mom, if you click on the link in the post above, you will be led to a post about the first time the first lady wore the Jasmin Shokrian skirt. The post includes a close-up, detailed image of the skirt, which you may enjoy.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 9:17 AM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

@trinisamba - I wouldn't call this a pure black ensemble, in which case I would have understood the shoes. The skirt had its own black and white personality. I either would have made this a black and white ensemble OR added a green accessory to the top (necklace, brooch,) and then the shoes would have completed the look. As it stands, I don't think it looks very put together.

Am so delighted that the Obama women had a weekend in NYC! I hope they come back often! And Mrs. O looks beautiful and perfect for an afternoon at the theatre.

Thanks, Mrs. T. I think you added that link after I'd sent my comment. Many of Mrs. O's clothes, like this skirt and the Jason Wu dresses, have some stunning details. Photographs probably don't do them justice. Since I can't see them up close, these detailed images are the next best thing.

I think Michelle models good behavior, and not just with food/gardening - including wearing sensible shoes when you're busy with children or out walking the shops. I would rather see her in flats than teetering along on silly heels that are inappropriate for her day's activity.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 2:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterCath S

I love that the First Lady rocks low shoes (those are not flats). They are sensible, cute and always look nice.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 8:20 PM | Unregistered Commenternonaw

Is there any info on the black bag she's carrying? I love the classic look of it!

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 8:47 PM | Unregistered Commenterbmw

Cute!

On the NY Mah Mrs O Look Book, you can see the skirt is very details and pretty.

I hope folks don't hold Mrs O when she's on vacation to the same fashion level they do when she's making 'professional' appearances.

Cute outfit. Chic but still comfy and just right for the event. Hope they had fun. WHat a pleasure for all those lucky ones who got a glimpse of them. I also read that they went to see the Addams family the next day. Maybe we will get new photos of that too?

This is a comfortable, yet stylish outfit for taking in a play or daytime recreational activity. I've read reports that patroms inside of the theatre were pleasantly surprised when they looked up and saw FLOTUS and the girls. That must've been a real treat for them. I like how understated our Michelle styled this. The pictures of Sasha & Malia are adorable as ever. Glad that they were able to escape the madness in Washington for a day.....shame that some people found fault in it. WHATEVER!

I agree trinisamba, very fresh. Although to me they look bronze, which to my mind counts as a neutral and perfect for a monochrmatic outfit.

Whatever, I roll out my habitual argument: Mrs O wore it the way she wore it. Aint nothing we can do about it now. If you have something nice to say, wheel it out. If you don't have anything nice to say, wait for an outfit to come along that you DO love and say something nice about that one!

I really admire Michelle Obama AND I love the running dialogue of this blog as long as everyone's respectful. It would be boring if everyone only had nice things to say about her outfits! I feel like I learn something about fashion trends from her fabulous days as well as her pretty regular ones.

Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 1:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterJill

Well that depends on your definition of boring. My definition of boring is having to deal with people who think casually slagging off nice people is a fun hobby.

Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 3:34 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

The skirt's hem comprises of weaved burlap strands encased with two layers of chiffon. The white strips are actually muslin while the rest of the skirt is made from a vintage stiff fabric. I have the pleasure of knowing the person who made the skirt and I've seen it up close, it's definitely a stunner. Glad Mrs. O chose to wear it again, I guess she really does like it
