Date Night

Image by Yuri Gripas / REUTERS

The first lady looked tres chic as she left for a date night with the president last evening. The first couple dined at KOMI restaurant in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. O's date night attire included a black blazer with bracelet length sleeves, a sequined black camisole, and cropped black pants. For accessories, Jimmy Choo Lantern heels, a VBH clutch, diamond earrings and a mixed stack of bangles completed the look. Might the stack of bangles be Mrs. O's new signature brooch?

Mrs O looks wonderful (and the President was awfully handsome last night) relaxed and elegant all at once. Only she can pull that off. I love the bangels, bag and shoes. She has such an infectious smile.

My town here in DC is still in awe of this couple. After a year and a half of having them here I saw on my local news that 200 people had gathered and went crazy with applause and screaming when they emerged from that restaurant.

They are just a beautiful couple.

Fantastic outfit! The jacket sleeves you call "cropped" are properly referred to as "bracelet length" for the obvious reason depicted to stylishly in the photo, above.

I love how she accessorizes with interesting and beautiful bangles. Inspired by Mrs.O I recently purchased a really inexpensive silver studded bangle and it goes with everything. I get a ton of complements too. Beyond fashion she really is an inspiration in every way.

Mrs.T I know this is really old news but i think the skirt Mrs.O wore to the 'A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement' event at the white house (seen here and here on the campaign trail) is Azzedine Alaia. I found this photo of an Alaia skirt on a model. It's a scan from Belgian Elle magazine. The high waist and full cut look exactly like Mrs.O's, only in an olive color.
Just thought I'd share that.

I like the hairdo..simple but chic. It looks like Mr. O gave her a bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day..when they left the restaurant she was holding flowers/roses...awww..he's so romantic..lol

I love those shoes. I remember them from last year, when she wore them a lot. And they were always the perfect touch with every outfit.

Makes you think about investment dressing and how it makes sense to spend significant money on basics.

Oscar de la Renta continues to insult the First Lady and he still expects to dress her. The nerve of the man, he may be famous for this clothes but he certainly lacks class. Some of you many disagree with me and that is OK, but I am very firm in that opinion. I would not want to be buried in his clothes.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterGeorgia

Here's what I love about this photo and Mrs. O's look: imagine if she was a model and she was looking directly at the camera, it would be like an editorial photo in a high-end fashion magazine. Seriously! (I'm a devoted fan of America's Next Top Model so I now better understand the concept of editorial vs. commercial modeling.) Anyway, this picture has so much going on that draws you in. First, the lovely smile and even the smile of the man seen in this photo. It's like there's something fun happening or funny said that only the two of them know about, and as the person looking at the photo I want in on it. Then there's the effortless yet elegant way Mrs. O is holding her clutch. When I see the bangles I want to know more about them -- that's why the jacket is so perfect. Finally, there's the movement of the pant legs -- there's energy in this photo. I just love this look and this particular photo. If I didn't already know what Mrs. O was doing and where she was going, I'd definitely want to know more. Love it! I'm so excited that they had a date night -- how fun! I'll have to check out the restaurant. Someone sent me the pool report from the evening -- I'll share it so that those of you here in DC can learn more about the restaurant if you don't already know about it. Oh, by the way, President Obama watched Malia's soccer match this morning in my Northwest DC neighborhood, two blocks from my house -- it's the second time in about four weeks that they've been here. Cool, right? Of course, my bad luck, I wasn't home either time! :(

As promised, more about Komi:

No. 1: Komi
Komi

Cuisine: Washington’s best restaurant is home to 30-year-old chef Johnny Monis, a wunderkind who disdains the trappings of culinary fame, preferring to expend his creativity and passion on his interpretation of Mediterranean cooking. Exquisitely fresh fish and seafood—in most cases presented raw and imaginatively accented—predominate at the start of the two set menus, giving way as the long, leisurely night unfolds to family-style preparations of luscious roast goat and suckling pig. In between, diners revel in a variety of tastes and textures, including one of the best pasta courses in the area—each noodle is accorded a separate dough, then rolled gently by hand and exuberantly sauced.

Mood: The most unpretentious big-ticket destination around: simply appointed, softly lit, with an air of quiet sophistication and a hint of something special in the offing. The staff—young, energetic, knowledgeable, and proud—is nearly a match for the cooking. You don’t feel looked after; you feel taken care of.

Best for: Gastronomic thrill seekers and all those willing to submit to a very particular idea of what constitutes dinner: an unhurried, sensual, and communal night out.

Best dishes: Roasted, mascarpone-stuffed dates drizzled with olive oil and anointed with coarse sea salt; a decadent, deceptively simple dish of sliced scallop with truffle emulsion and black truffles; a chewy tangle of handmade spaghetti tossed in a creamy, bright sea-urchin sauce and capped with lobes of sea urchin; roast suckling pig and baby goat with warm, house-made pita and a quintet of customizing condiments.

Insider tips: The degustazione menu puts dinner in the hands of the chef, but that doesn’t mean you can’t request that certain dishes on the menu make an appearance.

I am a bit itchy about the trouser length. I have a thing about "proper" trouser lengths and it's probably very fussy and prissy and unnecessarily purist. Either wear them way long, or wear them calf length for cropped. This length, I really do feel, look as if they are trousers that weren't long enough. Having said THAT, they both look very lovely, especially on the video coming out of the restaurant. So I should probably get over myself. But I couldn't wear 'em!

I love her outfit! I do feel like dates or vacation outtings should be off limits in terms of posting pics, not that I don't love looking at them but she's dressing for her husband in date pics & is just enjoying down time during vacations or at parent-teacher conferences.

Of course I still love the site & know if I don't like it I don't have to click but it's just my two cents.

Mrs T any plans for a part 2 of your book? It'd be great to have a new book each year :-)

I think this is a great outfit, and I especially like the bangles. I, too, am not entirely comfortable with the pant length and wish they were just a tad longer.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 6:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

If she's like my 6' tall (in stocking feet) DIL, when she wears off-the-rack jackets and pants, they often become "cropped" as to sleeves and pant legs. Some tall gals can carry this off - if jacket and pants are designed and fit correctly elsewhere - and no one is the wiser.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 6:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

Classic must have black suit. Love the swing in the fabric (maybe a touch of silk?)
Transitional (four season wear). Nice little flair at the bottom. Strap details on shoe sweet for the occasion and the solid back dresses up the suit. Our President’s suit colour glorious, different from the everyday blue/black.They look magical Our Lady and her knight in shining armour (smile)

Yesterday, while browsing in newstand, as usual checking for magazines with the President's picture. When I saw the words on the cover "Greatness has a New Name"
I just felt so proud and happy, this President works around the clock, very well deserved.
I'll be getting my copy tomorrow.

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Mrs. Obama's ensemble. From the chic hairstyle to the suit, shoes and bangles. I do not think the pants are too short. I think this is the look she was going for. I wish we could see a full frontal view of the outfit. And Mica, I must respectfully disagree with you. I love seeing how the First Lady dresses on date nights and vacations. It gives us a peek inside Mrs. Obama's casual style which I find inspiring. So Mrs T, please continue to post date nights and vacations. I also love that we have a couple who actually still dates. I only hope I will have that one day.

I noticed the longer jacket. Very current. I'm so glad I kept my longer jackets from a previous season.

Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 5:44 AM | Unregistered Commentercapitolhiller

It's a great date-night outfit, but I have to agree with Posh about the trouser length. I've seen a few shorter women who can pull off that length, but women of height--like Mrs. Obama and me--risk looking as if we couldn't find proper-length trousers. This outfit could have worked if the trousers had been a few inches shorter, a mid-calf cropped length. That said, I can't remember ever having a first couple who did date nights. Not only do we have a great president but we have a great role model for all American families. What a blessing!

Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 6:59 AM | Registered CommenterMsG

The length of the trouser is just fine because of the length of the sleeves on the jacket.

Wish I could see a frontal view of the outfit. Really wish she'd done more with the hair. I would even have taken a ponytail or bun over this look. Those jimmy Choo heels are her official date night shoes. She wears them often on date night. Love them. Watching Mrs. O walk to the other side of the car is interesting because I remember one of their earlier date nights when she tried to enter the car from the right side and the secret service corrected her that this was reserved for the president.

I seriously doubt that Mrs.O is wearing off-the-rack clothes that don't fit her properly.
I think this suit was made to be worn this way and the pants are probably custom from
the designer.
You would have to be tall to wear that look; similar to the models who wear clothes that 5.1 ladies wear only in their dreams. Can you just imagine that look on a short woman? She would resemble
a mushroom!

Thanks to the post lady who identified the tote bag.

Hi folks. First of all I love this look. But I do have a question regarding length of pants. Mrs T, you call them crop length. They look short to me but not short enough to be capri, but is this the style now r with higher heels like this. or a newer length of pants. Please again take me at my word, she looks great and I am not trying to pick on the outfit. I only want some fashion advice. Thanks, Shelly.

Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 4:30 PM | Unregistered Commentershelly

@BarbG I'm with you on trousers. Length is crucial, especially for we tall women. I would have gone longer and narrower or longer and wider but this seems betwixt and between. That's the only flaw for me in this outfit, however. Perfect to wear out for a Friday night D.C. dinner. The O's are very clued in to the Washington restaurant scene. Could Chef Chris be responsible?

I disagree about the pant length. I have a wide-leg pair made by Eileen Fisher that stops just above my ankles, and I love them. I actually thought I was stylish in them. I dress them down with flats and I dress them up with heels. I love wearing them with my Mary Jane-style Manolo's because it allows me to show off that gorgeous shoe. I'm 5'7" -- neither short nor tall, I guess. Anyway, I can't imagine that anyone would think Mrs. O or any other tall woman was wearing "high waters" as opposed to a pant that was designed to stop just above the ankle. Just my opinion.

Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 9:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterAccidental Lobbyist

On the off chance one of Mrs. O's stylists reads this blog, Banana Republic does a line of Tall Woman Trousers that fit great. A bunch of classic black trousers would be a good investment.

@ jazz, thank you for finding that article. I’m with the others on how to link by the click on “here” must be a special program. I found that magazine because I kept trying to find the USA weekend with Mrs. O. When she’s on three mags he’s also on covers. I decided to go into a smoke/gift/newsstand in the mall. Walmart does carry mags often but some convenience stores gets them depending on the location in my city.

“Adbusters” May/June he has a red ball over his nose, and the other magazine he’s got bandaid different areas on his face. Now he doesn’t always endorse these articles. The Economist puts out many articles about him. When I find the name of this mag. I’ll let you know. Great Article last year when he was on cover of Men’s Health. I wanted to get that as he shared his favourite dishes and recipes cooked by the white house chefs, and keeping fit, but they were pulled from the shelf quickly. I did find it in the library. I don’t buy all magazines just the special editions, like the Noble Peace Prize, and 2010 calendar planner for the year by Blast (I think).

@Charlene in Detroit – I enjoyed looking at those handbags, at bagborrowsteal, wow!! that is quite a selection, normally I don’t look at those sites. Thanks again.

I'll have to disagree with the posters who dislike the trouser length. I wear them the same way, and unless you've tried them, you'll never know how sensual they feel. Michelle has beautiful ankles which this length emphasizes. A shorter trouser would need to be slimmer and would not look elegant for a date night at this restaurant. A longer trouser would hide the ankles and overpower the shoes. Ultimately, it's Michelle's choice and I just happen to agree with her.

Monday, May 10, 2010 at 12:49 PM | Unregistered Commenterjulieda14

@Chrystelle, great article. I say great in that it reaffirms my opinion that some designers really feel entitled to dress our Michelle. They feel it's their right to do so, even if maybe she does not care for their designs, even if maybe she does not agree with their business practices (ie:zero or few models of color in runway shows), even if maybe she prefers the cut, fit, color and sensibilities of other design houses OR commercial retailers over them. Sometimes these things are not personal, yet the writers (or designers, if we are to believe what is printed) seem to take it personally and make it personal in the context of their frustration and/or criticsms. How do you think that will endear the FLOTUS , or anyone else for that matter, to you if that person is getting slammed on something that is a matter of personal choice = their clothing choices!

In that article it made a knock on Capri pants-- are they now considered tacky?? I wear them all the time here in spring/summer but I'm going to Europe for the 1st time (!) this summer for 11 days and now I wonder if Capri pants are really "out" over there or not.
