Cheery O

Photo by Greg Flume / Getty Images

The First Lady cheered as the first pitch was thrown at the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs game in Washington, D.C. yesterday. The game was dedicated to Joining Forces, which meant children of military service members were able to join Mrs. O on field. One lucky kiddo even had the chance to throw out the first pitch. No wonder Mrs. O is cheering so enthusiastically!

For the event, the First Lady sported a circle print top, cropped pants, gray Converse sneakers and a wrist full of summer-staple Jordan Alexander beaded bracelets.

Update: Mrs. O wears a printed silk and cotton knit top by Duro Olowu. Duro Olowu has certainly become a staple in the First Lady's closet!

I am loving the stack of beaded bracelets Mrs. O is sporting, with her Converse, too! Really cute.

Michele looks great in everyday wear< now I see myself wearing cropped pants, which I never wore before.

"Cheery O" -- okay, I must applaud the extra-clever headline here! You worked in a reference to Obama, the print of the top, and the cheer all in two words. :)

Wonderful...loving just how "real" this First family is...you go POTUS, FLOTUS, and FDOTUS...God bless the Obamas, God bless America. Thanks for all you're doing!

She looks so chic and so comfortable. I love bracelets and love seeing how she wears them so often and so well. For those who don't also frequent the Obama Diary, there are several more pictures of our FLOTUS at this event over there---

All I have to say is "The first lady is so fine." (In every since of the word.)

What energy! She looks fit and comfortable. How cool it must be to become a teenager and have a Mom like FLOTUS. Every Mom is special, but she seems so approachable and so cool.

I mean, the gray Converse says it all!

This is a very cute work-out look. Not sure it makes Mrs. O look like the FLOTUS. I know it is a baseball game but she did arrive with First Lady entourage.

A wonderful spirit dwells in her athletic frame. I simply love to see her in action.

She is absolutely the coolest and flyest.
So much grace, warmth and achievement embodied in one person.

Just saw a series of pics of Duchess Kate on her current trip to North America. She is an extremely classy, and well-dressed lady, and I'm very taken with her. Her dresses are beautifully made, fit impeccably and are "bullseye" right-on as far as appropriateness for the ocassion. HOWEVER, IMO would we want or need a dedicated blog for her fashions? I think not. There is no element of surprise and no fabulous unexpected details, no whimsy, okay I'll just say it, no Michelle-isms. What keeps us interested here, is the constant surprise, wow moments, and awe when we tune in to see Michelle's latest outfit, and we are rarely disappointed.

If ever interested in Duchess of Cambridge fashion details, you can check them out at whatkatewore.com

Two totally different women, sensibilities, and circumstances of their life in the public eye, but between her and Mrs. Obama I am thoroughly enjoying myself.

@babs--you captured my feeling exactly. So far, nothing the Duchess has worn has inspired me. Don't get me wrong--she very well dressed and very put together and very proper, but somehow her fashions are unapproachable.

Babs, I think you've hit the nail on the head re: the Duchess of Cambridge. But give her time to develop into her role and style...she is only 29. Hurrah for forty-somethings, I say!

On a different note, I wonder whether we might pay tribute to the late First Lady, Betty Ford? She showed great courage in battling her demons and leaves a positive legacy.

That's our Michelle! I just love her zest for life.....and she looks spiffy while doing it.
Go FLOTUS!

Betty Ford was a true inspiration to women, she boldly went where no first lady has gone before. Thank you Betty for your candor on many subjects that were thought to be "Taboo". And thank you for your gift of the Betty Ford Center, your legacy lives on.

babs, I think you make a good point. Kate is very Royal, more Royal than the Royals lol. I think she is limited in what she can wear. I also think she needs to gain some weight. Some of the things she was wearing was beautiful, but it would of looked so much more beautiful if she had some weight and shape on her.

Unlike FLOTUS who is able to choose freely, the Palace will always be a boundary around the choices the Duchess will make. Luckily for her she is conservative in her tastes--though she has a the ability to let loose. Anyone remember her sparkly hot pants during a roller skating charity event and shots of her lying on the floor? And for those of you who have seen all the shots of the "Marilyn" moment in the little yellow dress, there are different ways of being "hot." MO's holiday shorts are a non-event compared to that! But the Duchess will hear about that--it's guaranteed. Let's hope it doesn't force her into cardboard clothes like the rest of the senior royals.

I don't know that you can compare the two women, really. They're more than a generation apart and come from different paradigms in terms of what is expected of them. MO will have all kinds of different opportunities that she'll be at liberty to create for herself after her tenure as FLOTUS. Kate has married a protocol-driven job for life--as well as her Prince. (Luckily for her, she seems well-suited to both. And she will have lots of time to develop her role.) Though there are times I say, "Meh!" to some their choices, I like to enjoy both--for who they are and will become and what they wear..

Going backward a bit, the White House has a nearly 12 minute video up summarizing the recent trip to Africa. Her events are always posted awhile after the fact. I thought it was pretty well done. Almost feels that you are traveling with her--and provides good views of her fashions in action.

Apparently, after photographs were released of the Cambridges meeting the Obamas (more specifically, Catherine Cambridge meeting Michelle Obama), the Reiss website crashed as Catherine was wearing the brand's 'Shola' dress. (Am I right in thinking you don't have Reiss in the US?) The Duchess looked lovely, very neat, tailored and sleek. But there was Mrs. O, in her Barbara Tfank dress and pink bolero, representing her country with exuberence and poise, and she just made the Duchess look a little bit boringly dressed...

For sure, the Palace will have a word about weighted hems...and I wouldn't be surprised if a dresser is included in the Cambridges' entourage in future (even if the Duchess has eschewed one on this trip). Dressers know about these things!

As an Englishwoman I have to admire the poised way Catherine is representing the royal family on her first overseas tour. Looks as though they're both receiving a hearty North American welcome!

@ English Observer, it has been delightful looking at pics of them from various events. I have to say, William is the spitting image of his mother. She would've been immensely proud. The Duchess has yet to disappoint fashion-wise. I remember reading that the royal women have weights sewn in the hems to avoid "peek-a-boos" and slips showing. But even then there seems to be instances when that isn't enough. Oh well, such is life.....if that's the worst that happens to someone in the course of a day then how blessed are they? From all accounts that I've read she was glowing and quite personable, he as charming, smart and genuine as ever. It seems like it was a very nice visit. I hope they feel the same!

@Charlene in Detroit, you're so right! I hope Canada and the US have happy memories of the Cambridges' visit. Catherine will have some very special memories of her visit to both countries.

I haven't had the opportunity of visiting Canada but I met some very warm and friendly Americans in Baltimore and DC a few years ago. Have a good week everyone!
