Oh how we love the White House garden ... The first lady's purple Converse aren't bad either!

Update: Actually a question. Is Mrs. O's belt purple? We can't tell, though other blogs seem certain. We're almost postive this is the Sacai belt that Mrs. O wore on the cover of Essence, here. But perhaps in a new color?

I love the Obamas. I am thrilled at the very existence of Michelle Obama. I love it when she wears her hair in an updo. I love the color red on her. I love all her public initiatives. I generally love the things she wears and will not make one apology about gushing about the things that she wears when I like them. It was my clear understanding that this site was for those who wanted to celebrate her. At least that is what my welcome email said when I registered.

I am not crazy about prints, clunky pieces of jewelery like this one, too over powering for me. And the belts, w-e-l-l, sometimes I understand them sometimes I don't.

As a registered poster on this blog, I get all the emails that are posted in my inbox and sometimes I am frightened by the thoughts that folks are able to express because of the anonymity that the internet provides. Thankfully, the monitors of this site delete most of them before they appear, If you think that folks disliking her belts, or thinking that her Glamour cover is too June Cleaver and creepy - that is mild stuff.

There are some who only appear when they have something negative to say. Is there ever a time when you like something that she is wearing and doing and why don't you feel free to express what you like.

I agree with you Denisegirl. I hope the day comes when some of the bloggers on this site are able to discern between spiteful hateful bloggers and those of us who aren't always in awe of what Michelle is wearing.

By the way I recieved my copy of Mrs O in the post today and all I say say is "WOW !!!" It opens with a bit of background about Mrs O. Interviews from the designers make interesting reading. It is bursting at the seams with intricate details of the first lady's fashion. The close up's of the jewellry and accessories is fantastic. This clearly sets it apart from similar books that have been done in the past about famous ladies and their clothes which tend to focus purely on pictures. It ends with comments from Mrs O admirers and what they have to say really wamrs your heart.

Mrs T has really outdone herself here. I intend on giving a few copies out to my friends for Christmas. What a truly amazing coffee table book.

I think Obama telling Michelle that he "just didn't get" the belt thing was his way of telling her how unattractive the belts are.
They are ugly and I've seen the belts ruin many a beautiful look for Mrs. Obama.

DC - you saved me the trouble of responding to desertwind's post. Nothing personal, desertwind, but this IS a FASHION blog.

Julieda14 - my daughters wouldn't let me out of the house with that belt on, placed where it is. I'm surprised Mrs. O's mom hasn't told her to lose the belt. Too bad, because the african-violet color is amazing on her.

Some of you really need to get out more. Here it is AGAIN:

Mrs O likes belts. Some of us like 'em, some of us don't. Those of us who like them don't crow about it, the ones who don't could do the rest of us the same courtesy. This is actually about manners. Those people who don't like Mrs O in a belt can say so in a constructive way. "I'm not sure that I'd choose to wear a belt with that ensemble but the colour is nice" for example. Or "I don't think the belt complements that particular jacket". Not the routine slagging off that I yawn over every time a belt appears. "ruined" "terrible" "awful" "horrible". Yadda yadda yadda.

Certainly if I was face to face with someone who was wearing something I hated, and they asked me my opinion, I wouldn't tell them "that belt ruins your outfit.... again".

So yes, this is a fashion blog. So what?

Fashion is not about rules and laws. It's about style. Some people have it and some people don't. Whether or not you like Michelle Obama in a belt, she HAS got style and she is ALWAYS going to have style.

Furthermore, it is OK for people to discuss what she is doing while also being interested in what and who she is wearing. So, DC, thank you for your invitation to go somewhere else, but Mrs T has never objected to us all talking about what Mrs O is up to while we are talking about her style. Seeing as it's Mrs T's blog and not yours, I will abide by what Mrs T feels is appropriate, and not your suggestion for what's appropriate for me to do.

Lastly, I think Mrs O looks great today. I love the purple and yes it strikes me that this IS a purple belt. It certainly pops with a bit of colour in the photo's above. I've been considering getting some Converse for a while. Could it be that I actually needed to see a purple pair to take the plunge? I think it might..... LOVE the belt.
