'Spring is Here' (Updated)

Photo by Yuri Gripas / Reuters

That is the sentiment -- put best by our own LeahD -- projected by Mrs. O's dress du jour, a citrus yellow, beaded delight. The President and First Lady are hosting a Cinco de Mayo event at the White House tonight, and if Mrs. O's dress is any indication, the mood is festive! (Does anyone know why the Cinco de Mayo celebrations are happening today rather than tomorrow?)

To see the exquisite hand beading on Mrs. O's dress, click here. To see the volume of the skirt, click here.

Update: The acid green satin dress is from Moschino's Spring Summer 2009 collection.  (Thank you Mr. William for the tip!)

Mrs. T,

I believe they are celebrating today because Mrs. O will be in New York all day tomorrow (Cinco de Mayo). She speaks at the U.N. Mission with Ambassador Susan Rice and then in the evening she's attending the big Time Magazine Influential People event. She tried to give the explanation as to why she was celebrating early at the school today but she was interrupted by a question I think....

Probably they are celebrating Cinco de Mayo today because Michelle is going to be in New York tomorrow to greet employees of the United States Mission to the United Nations with Ambassador Susan Rice. Michelle will also be attending the TIME event tomorrow in New York.

The multicolor beadwork is fun - and the color of the dress is a favorite of mine. I like the boat neck as well.

A whimsical choice for festivities. The dress really does sing in Spring. Michelle's make-up is flawless.

A "beaded delight" indeed! Absolutely gorgeous.

Love the color and beading. Her makeup is just amazing, as is her hair. I'm not too sure about the puffiness of the body of the dress, I'd like to see a full length shot since the shoes and the way the dress ends (whether it tightens or continues to hang loose, and the length) could make a big difference to me.

Either way, they seemed really happy for the introduction.

I have been visiting this site for a while. I finally decided to post a comment. My comment is I just LOVE the First Lady and her husband. Everytime I see them it just brings a smile to my face. I get a kick out of that goofy smile that the president has sometimes. As far as the dress goes, I love that the beads are different colors. Her hair is beautiful as always. Love this site, check it every chance I get!!!

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 8:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterNyon

Oh...Wow! This is a very fun festive look for her. The dress, hair and make-up is just lovely! I understand this is a very tough and challenging time for the Obamas'and this country. However, I hope she is taking advantage of this time and having some fun with it.

Mrs. T, will you be around any of the events in NYC tomorrow?

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 8:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn#1

Nyon, happy to have you!

Ann#1, I won't be around any of the events. I wonder if they're open to the public? You can count on Mrs-O.org coverage though!

Thanks Mrs. T!

I must say "HATS OFF" the First Lady. Her dress is absolutely stunning, the color is most assuredly spring. She is soooooo beautiful and her make-up is flawless. She is so confident with her style, you make me proud to be a woman at this time Mrs.O. Keep it up. Watching the President and First Lady made me believe in LOVE again. God Bless you and your family.

I've become addicted to this site. I can't wait to see the first lady in New York,it should be fun.

Have we seen her in this color since Inauguration Day? It's really lovely and festive, I think. Love the beading on the bodice, love the earrings, love the...belty thingie. :) I don't know what it is! Hair and makeup, as usual, look great. But I miss that flirty little flip she used to wear.

I feel like maybe the dress could fit a bit more closely because Mrs. O has a really nice narrow waist. But all the pictures that show it full length are a bit far off, so I may not be getting an entirely accurate look. I look forward to finding out the designer -- do any Oers already know?

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 8:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Could this be one of Jason Wu's creations?

I like it.

Bursting w/ color and it's a fun, flirty, feminine, and youthful design....hence my guess of Wu. Hmmm...

A FLOWER IN BLOSSOM. Mrs.O is radiant in this color.

This dress is all kinds of festive! Carnival, Cinco de Mayo, 4th July...Bonita! I keep telling you guys this woman knows how to be appropriate for ANY hour - I'm taking notes here. For starters, this yellow against Mrs.O's annoyingly glowing skin, and the shinny hair and those glitzy earrings. A very cheerful & joyous look...

Cheers!

Love, love the dress shape, cut and the playful, colorful beading. Elegant AND sweet...it does have a "confectionery" flavor (pun definitely intended) to it. Kind of like a cupcake with sprinkles. My only frown is the color-anything olive and lime should only be worn by redheads/auburn/"autumn"ish colored people. The rest of us look, well, not so good.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterSildi

Great color, beautiful beading, and her usual perfect makeup and hair. But the fit is not great. It looks a little "off the rack" fit-wise, especially the bodice. And I'm not sure an empire waist is her best look. Maybe it's just the picture . . . sorry to nitpick, but surely there is a tailor in the White House, right??

"Party on"...... haha i love our president. mrs. o looks gorgeous. i need more pics.

Everyone, this just popped up on the CNN site from the Saturday 'date night' of the the Obamas. It just made me chuckle. At about the 1:35 mark, you can see the back of Michelle's shirt (full tied of course) leaving the restaurant, and boy it looked fantastic from the back when tied---very chic and elegant.

The commentary and the chef made me laugh. Okay, I didn't say anything before, but the drive from the restaurant to the White House is short; Michelle's shirt was fully tied leaving the restaurant.....okay, none of my business. But this little video was too cute not to post even though it was a few days ago.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterJanelle

OperaFanatic, I think it depends on what the bottom of the dress look like. I don't think it's ill fitting, I just think that perhaps the shape of the dress may depend on (as IVA put it earlier) whether it tightens or continues to hang loose, and the length.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterMimi

Oops, my bad. I should have looked at the video I posted more closely. The back of her shirt was tied leaving the WH, not the restaurant. Got to get my mind out of the gutter---I typically don't go there! LOL

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterJanelle

lol Janelle. No worries. It happens to all of us from time to time....

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterAmerican-n-Rome

@ Janelle - thanks for the video, it was all kinds of cute. Had me smiling! LOL at them removing the puff and eating the cream!

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

I love the color and the beading, but I'm not feeling the shape at all. The empire waist and shape doesn't flatter Michelle like some of the things that hug her curves. Also, her eyebrows look painted on. I think her makeup person needs to work out something different.

I LOVE that the Obamas are having these social functions at the White House. I think the events are important and appropriate.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:50 PM | Unregistered Commentersusan

I remember my Mexican blouses and dresses - white with the embroidered bodices and gusseted poofy sleeves. They were not form fitting, but they were festive. Michelle's dress evokes that memory for me. I can't wait to hear who the designer is.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterBevi

That beading is just too cute. The shape, not totally thrilled with. But the color is a knockout, wow.

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 9:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Janelle,
A big thanks to you from me too for posting the Jeanne Moos link - she always has good videos over there at CNN. I try once a week to remember to do a search and pull up all of her vids so that I don't miss any of them.

For an average of $100 a head I think I would have asked for the whole lobster instead of a 'lobster burger'.

Aren't they so cool, I love them more every time I see them.

5 DE MAYO IS NOT CELEBRATED IN MEXICO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Just as a cultural note: Independence day in Mex is NOT 5 de Mayo. September 16 is the actual independence day.
I don't know of the historical origin of USA celebrating a Mexican battle against the French (Battle of Puebla)...but in any case..just wanted to let you guys know...

BTW...Michelle looks great in that color green!

Love the hair and makeup. Very pretty. Like the color, the sparkels, and the color of the dress. Don't like the puffy bottom. Not flattering to her figure.

Okay. I really love the dress and would love to know if this is available for the rest of us to purchase. Anyone has any more info on the dress, designer, where to buy?

I just love my president and the fact that he's so respectful and inclusive of all cultures, races, nationalities, under the American flag. Even if its all politics he still rocks because he's genuine and people can really feel that. The mere fact that this man can manage to have a sense of humor is beyond me...

A great man and a great leader. Michelle is a rock star!!!!!!!!

Monday, May 4, 2009 at 11:54 PM | Unregistered Commentermojo

I don't think those are beads. I believe they are flat back rhinestones.

I really like that dress. *I* would wear that dress.

Mlaiuppa, I think you're right. Rhinestones, not beads.

In an unrelated qn, how many carats is Michelle's ring? Just a curious qn. Hope no one makes more of my qn than is warranted.

In photos # 5, 9, and 10 here:
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Jackeens/220
you can sorta see the necklaces she wore to the Cinco de Mayo school event.

Photo #15 is a good close up of the yellow dress detail.

Love the colour, love the beadwork BUT not liking the shape of the dress at all from the photo (might be better in person). It doesn't seem to sit right to me. Although it's empire line, it makes M appear flat chested (she's not) and the skirt is neither tulip shape nor flared (A line would have been better) nor full enough to contrast with the bodice so ends up looking a little mean.
My least fav dress choice so far.
I agree, her hair and make up are always flawless. Is it my imagination but her hair seems 'touch' browner??

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 1:08 AM | Unregistered CommenterCoutureCoco

actually the dress is not her best..and it 's not flattering on her..it's kind of baggy!! and pink lipstick does not look good on her..

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 1:58 AM | Unregistered Commenternancy

I think Michelle looks great and happy. To many people we who are well dressed but look always unhappy in there pictures. But she seems to look very relaxed in this photo.

Michelle, Michelle, Michelle.... such a pretty dress (it actually looks very neon colored in the video) but such an unfortunate shape. Call in Stacy London! Maybe Stacy could find a woman with Michelle Obama's height and shape and do a "What Not to Wear" episode.

Liking the pink lipstick with this particular dress. Her hair looks fantastic.

What the heck happened to that tie/sash on the date night blouse??! At first I thought she was walking the dog but then I realized they were coming back from a date so why whould the dog be with them......and hten I realized it was her sash!! Someone is sure to photoshop it with a kite or something at the end!
