Honoring Youth Arts

Top image by J. Scott Applewhite / AP Photos; Bottom image by Mandel Ngan / Getty Images

The first lady held a White House event today to honor recipients of the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. Robin Givhan of the Washington Post has a write-up of the event, here.

For the occasion, Mrs. O wore a carmine viscose jersey dress from Calvin Klein Collection, Pre-Spring 2010. We last saw this dress when Mrs. O welcomed the president and first lady of Mexico in May, here.

Today the dress received a punch of pink, accesorized with salmon pink heels and another gorgeous necklace. Mrs. O is certainly on a hot streak with the statement necklace!

Update: Thanks to reader 'shellecm' who reports that the first lady's necklace is Ranjana Khan (also wife of designer Naeem Khan!). Indeed, the necklace appears to originate from the jewelry designer's Spring 2010 collection, profiled in W, here.

It is frequently said on this site that first lady can where any color. This one is a dreamy, flattering color.
Sigh...hair and make up, DIVINE!

LOVE MRS OBAMA DRESS AND SHOES.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 2:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterMISS BAKER

Gorgeous color, gorgeous material - if only we could all wear CK so well. Any more info on the necklace?

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 2:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Y

The dress and shoes are a simple classic day combo. Lovely

However, the necklace is a cocktail embellishment. It in no way matches the dress or the event.

J. Crew necklace?

Very nice!

I like this dress a lot, and am glad to see it again! Her hair and makeup, as usual, is flawless.

That is a wonderful dress in an unusually beautiful shade of pink. I love the necklace also, and it reminds me of some of the ornate necklaces I have of my grandmother's, which I find many occasions to wear. I like the understated shoes with it. They allow the necklace to be featured.

For me, Michelle Obama defines beauty of spirit, strength of character, grace, intelligence, and leadership.

It certainly doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous and world-famous fashion icon.

Mrs. O has a great eye for color combinations. I heart her heels.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 3:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterGeorgia

Now THIS is a figure-flattering dress, in my opinion. Beautiful color of dress and shoes, and the necklace is a perfect Mrs. O piece. Wonderful!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 4:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterPat

@Katherine -- I feel like it matches because it seems like I can see some pink in the necklace? But that may just be the dress giving me that impression, my monitor is crappy. It doesn't seem excessively cocktail-y to me, though.

MO really needs to stop with these necklaces, because I WANT THEM ALL. And I have no money! *sob*

Love the dress, love the color, love the shoes, LOVE THE NECKLACE!!!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 4:33 PM | Registered CommenterLisa H

Again, I only have positive comments. The word that comes to mind is lovely!!! We have to find out about this necklace. It's superb. In my opinion, completely appropriate for day, especially an arts event. I bet DCers are glad she's bringing this type of excitement to the WH!!!!!!!!!

I guess I can comment on this more "comfortably" than most on this site: The color, fit, and accessories of the dress aside (all winning efforts, agreed), I cannot go without commenting on the First Lady's physique--and I don't mean that in a "stereotypical"-man-oogling-a-woman sort of way. The effort the First Lady puts into her fitness (and health) really DOES add a premium to how well she wears (and looks in) her clothing! Her arms, her legs, her posture: fit! fit! fit! It's more than just the fashion. It's also the form!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 4:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarcus Perry

the necklace is by Ranjana Khan and i LOVE IT TOO!!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 5:42 PM | Unregistered Commentershellecm

The dress color looks fuschia in the first photo, and coral in the second photo. It's amazing what lighting does to reflect color. At any rate, the dress is beautiful and those shoes look great. I am in the "love the necklace" camp. It does look like there is some hot pink in the necklace.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 5:54 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

I think it's kind of neat that her shoes are in a different shade. I would have just gone with black, because I'm boring. But this combo of colors from outfit to shoes works better, for me, than the blue-green shoes she wore with the yellowy-green inaugural outfit. And the salmon (coral/fuchsia whatever) shade is so flattering.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 6:31 PM | Registered CommenterChristina

Her ability to create astounding colour fusions shows a very creative mind. We could learn a lot from her. Are there any very early photos of her fashion sense. I am sure this style didn't just happen November 2008.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 8:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlma Blanca

Oh, she looks so beautiful! I'm less than 10 years older than our Michelle, but sometimes when I see a picture of her, I feel like a mother wanting to show off my daughter's straight A report card or something. I don't know, I'm just so proud of her! OK, onto fashion....that necklace is fierce!

This is a beautiful combination! The First Lady looks great.

@Marcus Perry: Totally agree with you.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 9:26 PM | Unregistered Commenteranar

I think the necklace is the perfect touch. There's more than one way to do elegant - it doesn't have to ALWAYS be 3 strands of pearls.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 9:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs Y

@ Marcus Perry,

I also agree with you. It is said that when we work up a sweat in exercising we are also ridding the body of all the toxins and pollutants our body absorbs daily, while at the same time releaving our minds of the stresses of the day. No wonder the First Lady seems so serene in the midst of all the political chaos generated by the opposition this election season! Finally, her strict adherence to work outs and fitness have resulted in her having such a well toned and "slamming" physique, which serves to enhance her fantastic wardrobe. So we all should take a page out of her book and....Let's Move!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 10:36 PM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

I'm a big fan and she looks lovely.... and Mrs. O is an inspiration with her healthy nutrition and active exercise regime... And... am I the only one noticing the spanx in the side view? Now that's a first lady I can relate to! : )

Very, very pretty!

It takes a really strong and grounded woman to gracefully withstand and stand tall through all the crap that's thrown her way by even those unworthy to clean her shoes and so cowardly in their cyber attacks and who by the way would've certainly wilted if they were ever subjected to half the crap this woman has had to tolerate.

Rock on Mrs Obama, ROCK ON!!!

Beautiful! Great dress, wonderful color. Now THIS is a well-fitted, "figure-skimming" dress with perfect proportions.

@ Charlene in Detroit - that is exacting how I feel everytime I see Michelle Obama, she makes me gush with pride everytime I see her. I'm so incredibly proud of the fantastic job she has been doing since she stepped into her first lady role.

@ Marcus - I so agree with you and great to get a male perspective.

@mszonian - You always make sense.

@ eleroy - Your posts always brighten my day.

@ Mrs Obama - you look fantastic

@ Ranjana Khan - You look amazing for a woman in her 50's. Proof that age is a number. If you invest in your body and health the rewards are amazing.

How incredible...... I like neither the dress or necklace but I have to say Mrs O is looking really REALLY good in this picture *despite* an unflattering dress in a ghastly colour, shape and length, the neckline, necklace, shoe colour and heel height! Which only emphasise for me, how incredible her make-up is, poise, physique etc etc. Amazing that she can still shine even in an ensemble that does nothing for her.

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 9:29 AM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

@Posh Tater,

Now tell us how you TRULY feel! Time and time again I get a hoot out of women like you who are so vocal in telling this woman what looks good on her or not, mind you, if some stranger were to approach you on the street and soundly criticize your wear for the day you wouldn't hesitate to tell them where to go with their opinion. Yet once again, many use the anonymity of this site to continually castigate this highly accomplished, self-assured, educated, and down-to-earth woman on what she wears especially since her "ensemble does nothing for her". HOW DARE YOU! Who appointed you the arbiter of what's appropriate and right for her. You are of no account in this regard. It galls me to no end when posters like you take such delight in voicing your disapproval of this woman's style and what she chooses to wear on any given day. In the end, it's HER STYLE, not yours. If you don't like it, then don't wear it, you don't see anyone hankering to comment on your style choices, do you? I must say that every day my respect and admiration of the First Lady and President grows exponentially because from day one they've have to deal with the constant and incidious attacks, whether subtle or overt, yet they seem to glide through all this nonsense effortlessly and with a smile . I commend them and like millions of others, pray that God continues to grant them the grace and protection to continue to do what they do for all of us.

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 12:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterlisa

@mszonian524:

You really need to calm down. Someone is talking about Mrs. O style in a blog that is dedicated to their style. It had nothing to do with commenting on her as a person. You however, are clearly attacking someone for having an opinion. If you admire first lady so much why don't you start being like her more? take comments with grace and poise? None of us are in a position of any more ownership to the first lady than others and certainly when someone leaves a relevant comment about style and style only I don't see why any of us should have the right to attack them personally.

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 6:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHC

HOLD UP, Mszonian54, take a chill pill honey! I am all for roasting and caliing out the haters, but make sure that they are ACTUALLY HATING. Posh is far from hater. I know for a fact that she admires the First Lady and it was not her intent to tell the FL what to wear. She simply stated that SHE hated the color and that SHE didn't like the height of the heels and that SHE doesn't like the dress, and she said alot more, but you get my drift. So, while I agree mostly with what you say, I will let you know that I disagree with you this time and you need to get up off my girl Posh.

Thanks :-)

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 9:30 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

@ Nyon,

Just as you want me "to get up off your girl, Posh", I would say the same to you and Posh that "she needs to get up off my First Lady, Michelle" with her harsh comments! She could have accomplished the same with a more moderate tone. Usually it's not what you say but how you say it.

Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 10:32 PM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

@posh tater - I agree that mszonian shouldn't have gone off on you like that, but I was bothered by it myself. Sure, we can critique our First Lady's clothes - many of us have, but to just say, "that's ugly" or "that's disgusting," -well, that's not a critique, that's an attack. Why don't you llike it? If you can't point out the reasons for your dislike then it's just another way of going after her and disguising your nastiness. Isn't part of this blog a learning experience for us all? "It's the worst dress I've ever seen", is nothing but trash talk. It has absolutley no meaning and it shows me that you don't really know what you're talking about.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 7:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterJoanne Sterling

I love it when she wears solid colors - even though this may not be the best color against her gorgeous skin.... she looks good.

This latest hair-cut is less flattering than her look in early summer, there is something about the extra layer around her face that seems unneccessary.

Her make-up looks great, love the way her lips match the dress !

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 1:37 PM | Unregistered Commenterriver rush

I tried to stay out of this, because I've had my share of being beaten up on this blog, and I am a huge fan of the First Lady. But, I cannot stand by as Posh Tater is falsly vilified. She is a regular commentor on this blog, and it is evident that she is a fan, too. Nowhere in her post did she state "that's ugly," "that's disgusting," or "It's the worst dress I've ever seen." I was not at all offended by one word in her post. It is possible to hate the dress but love the person wearing it, and that's what I got from Posh's comment. Please don't pretend to be able to discern 'tone' form someone's post. Mine included. To prove that you can't, go back and read Posh's comment and imagine a smile on her face, as you do. I'm smiling, too, because life is good, and it is obvious to me that we all love Michelle Obama. Peace and Love.

Looks nice. Pretty color. I like some of her outfits better, but this is certainly classy and lovely and the dress flatters her wel.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 6:02 PM | Unregistered Commenterwatchingitall

Wow. I agree with Nyon and Lisa H. Posh has never been anything less than a fan of Mrs. O. And she has NEVER disparaged Mrs. O's anatomy, which is more than can be said for posters who feel the need to remark on too small dresses, huge hips, "those thighs" etc. etc.

But, I do feel that it is possible to discern tone from some posters, who never have anything positive to say, or who couch their remarks. Posh would not be either of these types of posters. I almost always agree with mszonian524, but not in this particular instance.

And I think that Posh's take on this outfit (which I love in every way) is that even though Posh does not care for this ensemble, she still sees that Mrs. O can rock a look by being - well - Mrs. O.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 6:08 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

Mszonian54, it's ok, I get it. I understand your need to defend Michelle Obama's honor. However, it's too bad that you let that cloud your judgement.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 9:54 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

@ Nyon,

This is the last time I will address you on this subject but it's worth reinforcing my point once more to you and others you refuse to acknowledge that there's a distinction between honest critique and outright attack. The words that some have used on this blog to describe their dislike of a particular item of clothing the Frist Lady chooses to wear are outright disrespectful and show a complete lack of any social graces. So the question is why do they do it? Nyon, this is where they manifest "their lack of judgement", because there is no need to be so petty when all they should be doing is explaining to the rest of us why they disapprove of the item of clothing the First Lady is wearing. It shouldn't be that difficult to do, all is required are some well-chosen words and some tact. And finally, Nyon, Michelle Obama does not need anyone to defend her honor, she's quite capable of doing so herself, and she has done so with her usual grace and complete sense of self.

Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 1:40 AM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

I find it interesting, Mrs. T., that you have allowed this nonsensical infighting among the usual suspects to go on and on, and have allowed several posters to "defend" Posh Tater and her rather nasty comment ad infinitum, yet when I try to defend myself or say that I am tired of Eleroy's sycophantic pap which is NEVER about FASHION, I am shut down. I would guess that I am not considered a member of your club, even though I have been posting (and taking a great deal of verbal abuse to the point that someone made remarks about my abilities as a grandmother) since day one. I put a great deal of thought into any postings, even those that some may perceive as negative, though they are NOT. The vast majority of my postings have been positive, and will continue to be.

Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 4:09 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Christen, I have posted your comment. And while I don't really wish to get into this ... as it's a gorgeous fall Sunday morning in New York and why ruminate in the bad energy?? ... I will. There have been a series of your comments that have offended others, prompting them to write to me and request that the comments be removed, which I've then done. This has also happened with other posters, and the exact same procedure has been followed. You are not being singled out. I received no complaints about the exchange of comments above, and thus left it alone. I was also extraordinarily busy this week with three graduate school exams. Staying on top of the posts was a challenge in itself, let alone going through the comments with a fine tooth comb.

On that note, I will say I really dislike the bickering that occurs on the blog, whether one is supporting or criticizing the first lady. It is not in the spirit that I first envisioned the blog -- to be a respite from the venom so rampant seemingly everywhere else online. I do my best to help steer and diffuse the conversation when it gets heated at times, but would ask that we all please just be kind to one other, and take a moment to pause before commenting. Hope everyone is enjoying this gorgeous weekend. xo Mrs. T
