Mrs. O at the Lakers Game

AP Photo/Chris Pizzello

The first lady and family took in Game 6 of the NBA Finals in Los Angeles yesterday. Mrs. O sported a one shoulder asymmetrical zebra stripe top for the occasion. Fun!

Update: For those wondering where Mrs. O is, it seems the first lady is taking a few days of much deserved vacation! For an update on Mrs. O's vacation whereabouts, read here.

i think as Ari pointed out in the previous thread that her top is a Junya Watanabe creation from spring 09.

Right, thanks for mentioning that chrystelle. I'll just copy the info on her top that I posted in the last thread.

Mrs. T, I'm pretty sure that zebra print top is Junya Watanabe for Comme Des Garcons. You can see the top retailed at the link below:

And It looks like she also wore it in Paris under a white cardigan when she visited the the Pompidou Centre modern art museum around July of last year. Seen here:

I hope that Mrs. O will eventually consider glasses to be part of her fashion presence. My experience is that when anyone over 40 is faced with the generally inevitable pronouncement that glasses are necessary for even adequate vision, there is often the thought that rimless glasses will make the glasses themselves, in fact, invisible. One might term this denial--ha. I seriously went through this myself. My further experience and observation is that, for the most part (and for women and men both), rimless glasses put us at least several generations behind where we are. Translation: "I look like my grandmother." I went for oversized lavender/periwinkle frames. These are now part of my identity--both fashion-wise and otherwise.

Mrs. O would look terrific in frames--great frames, all kinds of frames. Given this recent view of Mrs. O wearing glasses, I cannot imagine that frame stylists will not be leaping into her presence to offer their designs. How fun! These are my thoughts on this topic for the moment.

Best to all,

JMH

She's wearing glasses?

Looks like a fun evening.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 2:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterheather

@ JMH - it's so funny you mention rimless glasses. I have worn glasses since high school, and have always had frames, many different styles and colors. After looking at Mrs. O's, I am thinking about going rimless. Although I've been told I wear glasses well, I don't wear my glasses too often, partly because I find them to be uncomfortable to wear all day, every day, but I also feel like my eyes - which I consider one of my finer features - are hidden, so I don't want to hide them so much.

Therefore, the rimless seem light and not too "showy" as to distract from my face. I'm going to try some on soon and see what I look like. I have been getting simpler and simpler in my choices for the last few years, and rimless may suit how I'm feeling lately.

I really liked how Mrs. O looked with hers on.

I love this family so down to earth and natural...I have been wearing glasses ever since I was five years old Mrs. O makes wearing glasses look chic. Love her so much. The top and tights are cute I hope they have fun.

Iva and Ashley--I love your responses about glasses or no, and about the personal history definining your choices. This is what makes the world go 'round. Made me happy to read your words.

JMH

P.S. And isn't little Miss Sasha altogether beyond sweet in that hat? She is something.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 3:37 PM | Registered CommenterJMH

Sasha Fierce does look sweet as anything in her little hat, beaming while she watches the game. I think it's great that Mrs. O gets them out of Washington as soon, and as much as she can. I'm sure they appreciate it.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 4:43 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

Age sucks!! I am the same age as Mrs.O. and I too started wearing glasses. But I was thinking about
getting contact lenses for when I am getting dressed up to go out..
Like IVA I consider my eyes my best feature and don't want them hidden behind glasses. The only problem is yours truly don't have a clue about putting in contacts. Just to put drops in my eyes is a lot of drama. O well...

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 4:51 PM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

I couldn't work out why anyone was talking about glasses seeing as Mrs O isn't wearing them here. Eventually I managed to track down one tiny picture of her wearing them. So... they're very nice. And I can't imagine why we need to go into the glasses thing overmuch. Good to see the ladies of the First Family getting away from Washington and have some fun.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 4:51 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

She looks cute in her glasses and that shirt is real long. Is it a dress or just one of those long tops? They look like they are having fun and I read that the girls got the Pres a jersey with his name on it for Father's Day. Sasha is too cute with her hat and both of the girls are growing up right in front of us.

I found a video of Mrs. O at the game on yahoo, but it's not good and you can't see her that well, but my favorite part is when you hear the dude saying "Oh my God, is that Obama, Michelle Obama" and then he says, "oh, I'm supposed to be watching the game" and turns the camera. Hilarious!

Marcelle, If I ever have to wear glasses, then I will just be wearing them because I can't put contacts in my eyes either. My eyes water just looking at other people doing it and back when I was in high school and wearing different color contacts were in, I could never partake in that trend :(

Flotus has worn glasses before, so she likely wears contacts. There is an old picture of her with long hair and glasses sitting at a table, with Malia when she was a baby and Potus.

@JMH. Thanks glad you enjoyed my story.
The pair I have are semi frames, the frame covers the top and the bottom half hangs freely. I went for a vintage 60's style but for some reason my coworkers have given me a nickname "Msm Frizzle" you know from the magic school bus. I just love the kids you have one that is reserved and then you have the sassy ball of energy and laughter that is Sasha.

Unique piece. I saw pics at Style.com, same colours, yes, but can it be worn different ways? Sasha looks so much like her Mom here. Re glasses, @JMH I agree with you 100%. Rimless make some people look older "granny" I am an eyeglass fanatic. At the beginning I thought rimless would be lightweight but when I used a four-way mirror, looked liked a old lady with spectacles. Frames are quite fashionable.

My eyes may be my beauty too (dark brown) and you may find this strange but I wear them to look younger (hide wrinkles perhaps). My son hates glasses and had Lazer surgery done two years ago and is quite happy with it, (he had worn glasses for driving only - being near-sighted and he's under thirty).

This really is a unique piece that our Michelle has on. After seeing the pics on Getty as well as Yahoo I've concluded that while it may very well be Watanabe, I don't think it's a top. It looks like a dress or a skirt with the top. The one she wore last year while visiting The Pompidou Centre was waist length. This one clearly is knee length. It's quite fashionable, I like that asymmetric neckline and the zebra print just adds a little something extra.

It's really refreshing that FLOTUS was able to take her girls, First Granny included, to the game. It sure looks like they enjoyed themselves. I saw a pic that shows Will.I.Am from Blackeye Peas sitting in the row in front of her. It doesn't hurt that apparently their team won!

For you who fear contacts, give them a try. I started wearing them about 5 years ago, when I could no longer deny that I needed glasses for more than just reading. I'll confess to a "little" vanity and not wanting to cover the features that I actually like, but I also love my contacts because they're more comfortable than having something on my face all day long, I can wear regular sunglasses, and I still have peripheral vision. I admit that sticking my finger into my eye did take a little getting used to; it took a few months actually for me to get the knack of just popping them in and out, but for me it was WELL worth the effort!

I LOVE this outfit on her. It's a great print, and I really like the long top-slim pants look.

There could be 2 reasons for glasses, one if you are a contact lens wearer but your eyes got very irritated for some reason, you would wear your glasses for a day or two.
Or two, nearsighted people who wear contacts, when they reach age 45-50, would need reading glasses over the contacts in order to see close up). Speaking from personal experience. (The daily disposable contacts are the only way to go, in my opinion).
I'll say one thing about glasses, from somebody who's needed them since age 12--are there actually people who put on fake ones just because the frames look chic? Ugh why

Thanks for the glasses links - I was wondering what was going on!

Does anyone know the identity of the woman sitting between Malia and Sasha?

Looks like they are really enjoying California! Love all the smiles on their faces

Mrs. O looks radiant. Is that a sequin tank on Sasha? She looks darling. And Malia is growing into a beautiful young woman.

There are so many really beautiful frames these days that make glasses fun to wear. I hope Mrs. O acquires a few different styles to complement all the great angles in her face.

Unfortunately, not everyone can wear contacts. They don't lend themselves to serious corrections; if you glasses lenses are really thick, you may not be able to adapt to contacts that have equivalent correction -- I wasn't. Tried for several years in my youth, and finally gave up; was told I didn't "tear" enough to keep them comfortable, and I just couldn't learn to force myself to blink more often. Although that may be a separate issue?

And, I was in the glasses shop yesterday to get my son's repaired and was looking at frames... not that cost is an issue for MO, but the Palin-style rimless frames were double or more the cost of mainline frames ($300+ vs $145)

As to the top, at first I thought Ari's first link, to the Watanabe top, must be it, but now I'm not so sure. There are details both of the "shawl" shoulder and the "cap" sleeve one that don't quite match up. Although maybe you can push and pull on the shoulders for slightly different looks?

But I don't think there's any way a person MO's height could get that "hipster" length half-way down her thigh! Maybe JW also did a dress-length variation, that also switched the shawl-shoulder from right (in Ari's link photo) to left (in the MO photos)... that certainly seems plausible? I certainly think it's close enough to make me wonder what else he did with that fabric in that collection; I absolutely think the fabric is a 100% match.

Call me curious (and aren't we all?), I am wondering about the identity of the blonde woman in ***great glasses*** and a sweetheart neckline to Mrs O's right. Also, I'm wondering about the identity of the "godmother" mentioned elsewhere. I'm imagining this is the woman seated to Mrs. Robinson's left. I recall no previous mention of a godmother.

Fashion-wise, and after my rumination about glasses that seems to have triggered so many fascinating responses (unwittingly on my part, you can be sure), I will belatedly say that I seriously love the assymetry of the top (tunic? dress?) Mrs O is wearing. Whatever it might be otherwise, it's a dramatic shoulder presentation that suits Mrs O very well.

Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 3:47 PM | Registered CommenterJMH

JMH, that is her deputy chief of staff Melissa Winters and yes the lady next to Marian Robinson is the girl's godmother. She has been around alot and she even went on that trip with them when they went to Rome and all those other places. I think somebody said her name was Kaye, but I am not sure so don't quote me on that. I also thinks she is the one who does Malia's hair in those cute twist she has sometimes.

Let's go Celtics!! ;-)

Nyon, thank you! Clearly, I am not as observant as I would wish in terms of the identities of those folks who typically surround Mrs. O. I particularly love your inkling that the godmother is the one who "twists" Malia's hair. Would that my hair were twistable! Ain't gonna happen in this lifetime... sadly. Thanks, in any case. I always look forward to what you have to say. JMH

@Nyon - you are right about Malia and Sasha's godmother's name. Each time I have seen her mentioned in various articles, she has been listed as Eleanor "Mama Kaye" Wilson. Prior to the inauguration, recall comments that she would be a regular visitor with the Obamas in the White House.

Love the picture of everyone at the game - especially Sasha.

Hi Mrs T, ladies, I know it's been a while since I've written on this post (been traveling a lot), but this top is as fierce as the woman wearing it!

Crystelle, you are on the money with those pictures except Mrs.O chooses not to cause a stir by wearing it solo! Instead she is wearing the dress with leggings - smart move. Could you just imagine the raucous she would cause if she wore it as a dress!!! Goodness, we would all either die in shock or awe...

Cheers!

Miss Sasha is growing up and is going to be a real beauty. Malia is going to look like her daddy.....tall and graceful. I'll bet some modelling agencies are already looking at her. Look at that long neck and her bone structure!

I love this zebra "top" the FLOTUS is wearing but I have to agree, I'm thinking it's a tunic and leggings. Perfectly appropriate and comfortable for a game. I wonder if it comes in a brown and white?

First found out about 'Mama Kaye' in Ebony magazine. She is the one who does Malia's braids, and helped Mrs. Robinson while the Obamas were on the campaign trail. She's part of their circle that they depend on to keep them and the girls grounded.
