New Year, New Looks

Images by Saul Loeb / Getty Images

The First Lady left Hawaii last evening wearing a simple white tee and pink leopard print skirt. This morning Mrs. O was back to Washington, D.C. and dressed for winter weather, deplaning in fleur de lis applique pants (certainly a first lady first), a gray wool coat with lace trim by Thakoon, seen here, and Prova scarf. The First Lady debuted said coat in September 2010, here. Hope everyone is having a fabulous start to 2011!

How about Malia's jacket? She's developing quite a style of her own!

Mrs. O Looks so relaxed after a well deserved holiday. Look forward to the wardrobe for 2011

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 9:07 PM | Unregistered Commenteralmablanca@msn.com

I like both outfits. Everytime I see Ms.Obama she has always presently suprised me with her selections. I love the pants and boots, just so edgy and fresh. You can see a larger picture on the HuffPost website (Style section). Jay

Love Michelle, hate the pants. They just make her look wide (and she is not), and they don't fit well up around the abdomen. Now Malia-- wow!

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:17 PM | Registered CommenterSootica

Oh, and my opinion about the fit is based on the style section photos at Huffpo.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:17 PM | Registered CommenterSootica

Love the stylish jackets. I've been looking for a jacket all season but can't find anything I like.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterThatOtherMimi

Oh, where or where can I get those pants... NEW ORLEANS SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
She is always on her game.... hope my Saints can do the same :))))))))

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterRenetta J

Malia is totally picking up a lot of Michelle's mannerisms ( folded arms, clasped hands, and some people say a bit of a slouch) but she has some of Baracks too with ( arms on hips, wide stance and leans to the side in photographs). Yes I've been noticing over the years can you tell?

Love both girls jackets, Sasha's Stella McCartney sweater from Gap, and Malia and Michelle's work boots. Everyone looks nice and well rested.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Those pants are O.K. for a younger woman but don't look that great here. The boots are rather strange, too. Mrs.O doesn't look that comfortable. Maybe, they are just freezing after the
fabulous Hawaiian temperatures.

I'm really liking Sasha's blazer and tee

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

She always seems to surprise us with what ever she wears and I think it's the refreshing and simplistic way with which she carries herself that makes me smile who else would look so good in a simple white t top only Mrs O. thanks for this website I love it a lot. Looking out for what she will wear in 2011

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan Nwajei

The pants are not a good choice in my opinion. Like he outfits in general.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 12:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterJulia

LOVE LOVE LOVE the 2nd outfit it soooo qt and edgy

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 2:37 AM | Registered CommenterJasmine Roberts

Never mind Malia.....look at Miss Sasha! She has some edge!

Is the skirt leopard print or kisses? It looks very familiar but I can't place it.

Would like info on the boots she's wearing in the second picture.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:30 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

Not feeling the pants at all but I'm so in love with the pink leopard print skirt. Happy new year to everyone !

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:57 AM | Unregistered CommenterJestina

Second outfit is edgy, sharp and chic. European flair as it were.

Don't care for first ensemble.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 4:09 AM | Unregistered CommenterSPQR1052 Lugano,Switzerland

IMHO, what a disappointment ! I find both outfits ugly and not appropriate. The worse thing is the stomach in white ! The Obama diary.com displays another pictures of the second outfit and even Mrs Obama seems, for the first time, not confident at all ! So please dear Mrs Obama, never that again ! I'm eager to see the next clothes.
On the contrary, Malia seems to have a really good taste !

I will be glad when the leggings fad is over. They look great on little girls and not so great on mature women!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 6:40 AM | Unregistered CommenterThumper

Love the skirt! The tee doesn't flatter her waist - looks like she has a tummy,

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 9:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterSasha

Interesting to hear the range of perspective. I find the pants/leggings to be rather busy. Not my favorite look of Mrs.O's I'm afraid ... but there are sure to be gems just ahead!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 9:12 AM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

Well the first outfit is the "I am travelling home and holding on to my vacation look" outfit. Okay, we can see a little tummy, but I like the belt (I think its a belt). The second outfit- well I like those washed, sandy colors but yeah maybe it the coat we longer around the thigh area...hey I am moving on to wait for the next stunning outfit.

Anyone know who the jacket/sweater combo is by that Sasha is wearing? Lovely, and hip!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 9:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterAdear

@Adear

Not sure about the jacket but the sweater is by Stella McCartney for Gap Kids.

Oh, and I like both outfits.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 10:57 AM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

I'm not feeling that skirt. However, I do like the entire second outfit. I really love the boots! Malia and Sasha are on point as usual.

I know they hated leaving that warm weather to come home to the cold.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 12:38 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

No to both outfits!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 1:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn

yuck to pants/leggings...Yeah to skirt...

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 1:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterann50

I think that michelle Obama 's shoe come from Robert Clergerie in France.
I love the colour of the skirt.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 1:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterANNE LAURE FROM FRANCE

The beige outfit reminds me of 1980's Prince video but also a little funky and edgy. I don't think I like it much. The outfit is more Shiana Twain than Mrs O. The skirt and the Tshirt are fine, nothing major vacation wear. Mrs O must have enjoyed her vacation, she seems to put on a little weight,or it might be the camera angle. I know she will be "Let's Move" a lot this year.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/first-ladies-obama-and-bruni-sarkozy-will-do-lunch/?partner=rss&emc=rss

This will be an opportunity to see some nice fashion from two first ladies. I also admire Mrs Sarkozy style. She is simple, and chic, while Mrs O is chic, retro, casual and sporty all at once time. I think Mrs O is more Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke show than anyone else. A chic mother who does casual well.(except for those beige leggings) and can look absolutely fabulous when the occasion requires her to. Does anyone agree with my assessment?

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 2:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterHelen

I love leggings and I wear them all the time. I loved it when she was sorting toys before Christmas, but I do not like this look at all, period, although I do like her boots. The kids look quite fashionable though. Malia is coming into her own.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 2:23 PM | Unregistered Commenterdasie

Not my favovotie ensenble for either picture, but I'm glad to have them back in WDC.

The kids look terrific !

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:12 PM | Unregistered Commenterriver rush

Oh what style. I don't have the words to express the extreme style.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterJulLou

Mrs. O is hosting Carla Bruni for lunch in the private residence on Monday while President Sarkozy meets with President Obama. It's private but I'm hoping maybe Samantha Appleton will snap a photo for us at some point? Would love to see them together again.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 5:04 PM | Registered Commentermeta

Great, I have just flown almost 7000 miles and am back in winter winter outfit!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 5:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHC

It cracks me up when people say that a child has very good taste or
has a style of her own. Kids wear what their parents put on them. Plus, these ladies have a stylist or a team of stylists that choose outfits for and with them and pull it all together. With that said, malia and Sasha are always well dressed. The president represents his office well. And, Mrs. O is very chic and cutting edge. This first family is truly an inspiration for us all.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 8:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterLoved One

I like the tee and skirt departing Hawaii...it looks like her. The arrival outfit in DC just isn't working for her. I don't know why. I think it's the leggings. I like the jacket and boots.
What I notice about her walking towards the WH is that feeling of....The vacation is over and now it's back to the daily routine.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 9:32 PM | Registered Commenterann#1

To those saying ' NO' and " Not for her" Not Michele Obama"... Arent the clothes on her? Her choice? And I assume you all are saying No, I wouldnt wear such and such.... Whatever she puts on, IS HER! Period
:)

@Rennetta

I assume that you have not frequented this blog for a while, because the comments in this post are typical of the type of comments that appear on this blog daily. A small percentage of this blog is made up of comments deciding if one likes, or dislikes what FLOTUS is wearing in a particular post, a huge percentage of the commentators on here believe they decide if FLOTUS is wearing an "appropriate" outfit. Thus, regardless if the clothes Michelle wears are her choice, it does not matter.

So far the women on here feel that FLOTUS should not wear,

*Shorts(there was a shorts-gate in 2009)

*Sleeveless dresses in the winter(I pray that she wears an outfit that has sleeves for the upcoming SOTUS Address)

* NO bright clothing at somber events

* Recently I read that leggings are "inappropriate" for Michelle to wear.

*Also, she MUST not wear fitted clothing, since she is not a size 2 or 0

I love the color of her skirt, I would like it better shorter, and I love her jacket and boots, very chic.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 11:15 PM | Registered CommenterM.M.

The girls are old enough to have some say so over what they wear. I'm sure as long as it is not inappropriate, Mrs. O and Mr. O let them choose what they want to wear. By the time I was ten, I didn't want my mom combing my hair. Shoot, trying to send me to school with 10 ponytails with bows and baurettes, LOL! I can remeber the fights and I can't say I won them all, but eventually she gave in ;-)

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 1:37 AM | Registered CommenterNyon

Amen, Nyon. My kids were picking out their own clothes by age 8.

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 3:18 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

I am really wondering what that is circling Mrs. O's waist in the first picture. Just looks odd and unflattering.
Per someone's comment, I would like to say that there is a vast difference between "fitted" clothing and clothing that is just too darned tight.
I hope the Obamas had a wonderful, relaxing, refreshing vacation...they deserve it.

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 5:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Love the boots she's wearing back in D.C. Who made those?

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 1:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeansy

@ Loved One

I can assure that the Obama girls don't have a "team of stylists." Mrs. Obama buys her children's clothing and let's them wear what they want. They are old enough to pick out their own clothes for walking to and from Air Force One and on vacations especially Malia who is 12 and is in 7th grade (girls her age don't want their mother or other adults picking out their clothes and styling them everyday) and according to her mother fiercely independent.

Friday, January 7, 2011 at 7:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Not a fan of either of these two outfits. I don't think that the leggings flatter her (or anyone) - especially in a light color and with a cropped jacket. It's a harsh look that few bodies can pull off.

Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 12:41 PM | Unregistered Commenterfun

@Mia Monte

I don't think anyone has disagreed that she can wear fitted clothing (in fact, those flatter her athletic frame best) but no one has been an fan of skin tight clothing. Those don't really flatter anyone, no matter what size and always tend to look cheap.

Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 12:34 PM | Unregistered Commenterfun

The boots are fabulous, who is the designer........

Friday, January 14, 2011 at 5:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterToni

I'm sorry, Sasha steals this entire day! What a rocking outfit!!!

Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 6:28 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

I really think Michelle needs a stylist. She looks so think around the middle and the things she wears just make her look fatter.
