Viva Brazil

Visita do Presidente dos Estados Unidos, Barack Obama

Images by Jason Reed / Reuters, Pablo Martinez Monsivais and Silvia Izquierdo / AP Images

The first family has arrived in Brazil for a state visit. After landing, the Obamas were joined by Brazilian President Dilma Vana Rousseff to participate in an arrival ceremony at Palacio do Planalto in Brasilia. Later, First Lady Mrs. O attended cultural performances at Oca da Tribo restaurant.

Update: Landing in Brazil, Mrs. O wore a Tracy Reese Auburn Tribal Stripes Strapless dress, available here.

For the official arrival ceremony, the First Lady wore a Rachel Roy one-shoulder dress and jacket, both in "Wall Print". Rachel Roy is certainly becoming one of Mrs. O's go-to designers. On the accessory front, Mrs. O mixed gold and rose gold horn bracelets by Alexis Bittar.

Several readers have noted that Malia Obama wears the Glanz Dress from Anthropologie, available here, while Sasha wears the Girls' print Alessandra dress from J.Crew crewcuts, available here.

Mi vida. My life. This woman just always brings it! OMG. Loving it!

WOW!!! She looks amazing. I love every single one of these outfits! And the burnt orange dress is so beautiful and I love the shape of it.

And before anyone tries to say Mrs. O is showing too much skin, she's in BRAZIL! Even the President of the country has her arms exposed. If you've ever been to Brazil on vacation, they revel in the female form and women wearing beautiful dresses and showing off their fit bodies is celebrated.

Mrs Obama's dress is inapproriate for the occasion. It would be lovely evening wear.

Curious dress for a daytime speech to young people. The dress top is similar to the black and white Gaultier blouse whe wore during her Marbella walkabout. Note how casually her mother is dressed:

And the girls are still wearing the dresses they deplaned in.

Awesome! Never would have thought to put the blues shoes with the burnt orange dress but absolutley love, love, love it! I want a pair of gold heels! Those are awesome and the one-shoulder dress is great. Love its versatility of looks with the jacket and without the jacket. Thanks for the pictures, Mrs. T!

Now, thats what am talking about Mrs.O bang on fashion!! I like the dress of the plane, very carnivol like; 'cause when you go to Brazil, you dress as the Brazilians do :-) And the suit gal...yeah!

Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 2:56 PM | Registered Commenterwinnie jeans

I'm liking the deplaning dress much better than the shiny suit.

Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 3:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn

I like the outfit she is currently wearing much better without the jacket. She should have left the jacket off for the luncheon.

Seriously, as someone who has vacationed in Brazil twice and who has many Brazilian friends, Mrs. O's one shoulder dress is not at all "inappropriate". It's a different culture and women wearing sexy clothes are celebrated, not called "inappropriate". Bright colors and exposed skin is common. There are women on the local news over there who wear mini skirts and show cleavage. Please don't judge Mrs. O's clothes through puritanical American eyes. Form fitting outfits, bright colors, and exposed skin is par for the course over there.

No one in Brazil is talking about her clothes being "inappropriate". Believe me. I'm sure they're admiring her figure and soulfulness, as they think most American woman to have unshapely bodies and cold attitudes.

I love everything Flotus, but could the photographers please stop with the upskirt shots. When ladies are seated they should just be shot from the waist up. That is all, that is my rant for the day.

While bare shoulder dress would be fine at night. This is a young people's martial arts exhibition, and it is daytime.. Still, if she were Brazilian, or just a tourist, it would be okay. But she is our American First Lady, and represents all of us. She should have left the sundress on, for this event, imo. The come hither look doesn't work in this setting and in her position. The dress appears to be a satin or silk evening type fabric..

The red print dress with blue shoes is nicely "American."

I really like the dress shown here http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/02IngBkgIUeDl/100x75.jpg?center=0.5,0 which is different than the similarly colored dress under jacket shown above?

Well so far I am liking the dress she came off the plane wearing. The color, the shape, the accessories.
I am not feeling the second gold suit....I can't put my finger on it as to why...but glad they made it safely there and looking for the roll out of the rest of the outfits

This is such a trip full of fashion! Not only for the one and only, Mrs. O, but also for Malia, Sasha, and Grandma O! I am excited to see what else is in store for the Obama's! After all, they are only on the first day of their trip.

These pictures are really nice. The Obama's look great.. all of them. But I wish we could get more pictures that show off the beauty of all of her outfits. i went to www.huffingtonpost.com and www.theobamadiary.com and they both have fantastic pictures that show a variety of profiles that show off the Obama's departure and arrival especially Mrs O :)

Interesting that the president of Brazil has chosen a lovely simple red dress that carries her through all of her appearances, including the evening.

Our FLOTUS does it again. All outfits are wonderful, and the children should not be required to change, too much trouble for the young.

Wow, so excited to see Michelle & family on the road again! That's when her outfits really get interesting (and now we have the girls' outfits to swoon over also!)
First impressions-REALLY like the red dress she deplaned in and the girls are absolutely adorable. The bangles on both Michelle and Sasha are too cool! But not crazy about Michelle's blue shoes, IMO they clash with the dress.
My first reaction to the beige suit, was similar to a couple people above, that it is too dressy for the occassion. It looked like it was metallic. But after further examination on Obamadiary, I changed my mind. It actually looks like a real soft cottonish fabric with a little sheen to it. And the swirly fabric is kind of exotic, just like Brazil. Also, the Brazilian pres. is pretty dressed up too. She looks great. At first I fell into the trap assuming that she was Brazil's first lady, but quickly found out that she is indeed the President!
Also saw pics of their traveling outfits as they departed from the White House. Wowsa. All four Obama/Robinson ladies look spectacular. The girls are turning into cutting edge fashionistas.
OMG another photo with new outfit just posted on obamadiary, it's too exciting!

Sorry, but that dress she wore while lovely, was totally inappropriate. It is indeed something you'd wear to a cocktail party.

I like all of Mrs O's outfits except the one shoulder dress.

I love that she instantly makes it formal with the matching jacket (took me a while to realize that the dress was the same one as the speech lol) but I find the dress a tad too "evening gown"-ish for a day time event (& yes, I've already taken into account that it's hot there lol).

I find Malia's skirt a tad too short BUT I'm not here to judge the adorable first daughters lol.

Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 8:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterMica

They arrived first in Rio then continued on to Brasilia the capital for the start of the visit so it makes sense that the children are wearing the clothes they deplaned in because they had already changed for the occasion. Mrs. O's dress is an embossed cotton very suitable for day wear in Brazil. She is in Brazil folks and moving with the substance of the country.

Most women would have paired the red/black print dress with black shoes....leave it to FLOTUS to pair the dress with electric blue flats...sooo innovative. FLOTUS has taught me so much about mixing colors, prints and textures. I just love this woman!!

I love having such a cutting edge FLOTUS. That suit, with the amazing one shoulder dress underneath, is a stunner. It looks like a very light silk charmeuse to me - very soft. And the beaded dress she is wearing later is a work of art. I have no idea if I'm right, but the beading detail reminds me of Naeem Kahn's work.

And she's wearing a gold version of the Choo kitten heel sandals ("Lantern" I think) she wore all last summer in silver. I still lust after them.

I also think she's added another ring to her wedding set. Anyone else notice that?

Until Mrs T can catch up with all these quick changes and give us designer details, go to theobamadiary.com and feast your eyes. Lots of candid shots that show the clothes, but no details about them. But the pictures are yummy!

@ Kathryn,

There's nothing "inappropriate" about the First Lady's dress, afterall she's in the tropics where people are a lot more casual about their dress and women are unafraid about showing their bodies (in other words, more skin). So loosen up, don't be so uptight and puritanical. Take a look at the audience, does anyone look insulted or ill at ease? On the contrary, they are paying rapt attention to what the First Lady is saying.

I watched it all live yesterday and her pale sheen golden-grayish one shouldered/sleevered watercolor like print dress and matching jacket were very appropriate for the warm and rainy day and formal appointments ( a government reception, youth meeting and head of states ' lunch) The jacket had a tuxedo like collar and structured seams at the shoulders. She looked youthful, comfortable and chic. Malia was very pretty wearing a white, turquoise and mintgreen dress and navyblue jacket. After lunch Mrs O. wore an exquisite golden embroidered sequined sheath dress paired with golden pumps for the last farewell appointment at the president's residence. They got in Rio wearing yellow casuals. Let's see what are the choices this morning and afternoon. Very nice so far!
I must notice that brazilian president's outfit ,red dress, shawl and shoes were nice choices too.

Mrs.T please show the Mrs.O's outfit while leaving Washington, for the first time we see her in a leather jacket, great slit skirt and lovely heels. She's never worn these before.

She went from conservative to fire-hot with the removal of the jacket. That suit is fierce. And paired with the gold heels and tribal bangles, it is perfect for Brazil. Love the updo too.

BeeGee, only you would care what the president of Brazil is wearing and ponder why she kept the matronly frock on all day. Only you, dear. As for me, and I'm quite sure other posters here, I live for the syncopated steps of Mrs. O's fashion march. Mrs. O-- place one Jimmy Choo in front of the other and show the world how it's done.

The dress she came off the plane with is tracy reese spring 2011; I love the blue shoes combination. And, I love love the second dress (without the jacket), the accessories are perfect.

Love the one shoulder dress suit. It was a nice way to go from informal to conservative without having a whole new dress. Perfection.

I came here to get details on what the first lady and her girls are wearing instead mostly all I see is people unjustly bashing them. The GOP really did a job on instilling the fake outrage meme. What happened to the great informational posts that use to include details over personal feelings on what flotus is wearing? disappointed at this blog.

Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 12:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterSS

It's allll gorgeousness!

My favourite is the one-shouldered dress. Some of you are just a wee bit too rigid with your application of "the rules". You'd have her looking matronly in long sleeves, mid-calf hems and shapeless clothes. She's not elderly, after all. And, HELLO! can you tell the President loves it! She dresses with him in mind, I'm certain of it.

The only thing I wasn't really feeling was the blue flats with the burnt orange dress. But, I applaud the effort. I would have gone with a black kitten heel sandal ... but that's just me.
