Weekend Chic

Photo by Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP Images

The President and First Lady are off to Camp David for the weekend. Mrs. O looked ever so chic leaving the White House, sporting oversize sunglasses and carrying a lime green Lambertson Truex tote in hand.

Reader stylishgurl has spotted Mrs. O's tunic, which is the Gap Impressionist print draped dress on sale for $29.99, here.

A winner, head to toe. Mrs. O appears crisp and casual at the same time. They both look so happy!

Very nice and flipflop is nice to!

That is a GAP top/dress Mrs Obama is wearing (on sale now for $20 or less). Amazing, I tried it on as a dress and didnt like how it looked, but thanks to Michelle it has potential as top. Hmmmm :)

Those sandals are so chic!

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 1:29 AM | Unregistered Commenteranar

I've noticed a lot of very affordable tunics and even beach coverups out in the stores that can be thrown over a nice pair of white pants or shorts for a great summer look. You can dress it up or down with accessories. You can find dresses that can pass for tunic tops like this in most junior sections if you can fit comfortably into the bodice.

Casual chic!

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 1:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterTHC1

Hi Stylishgurl

The top is part of Gap's collection of "Impressionist Print" patterned clothing, which also includes skirts, scarves, and vests (and probably more). Mrs O could be wearing an altered version of the dress, but more likely it is a unique top.

Do we know anything about the sandals?

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 7:04 AM | Unregistered CommenterAblema

I'd love to know who makes her sandals. They look more comfortable than the typical thong sandal with no foot support. Any ideas?

Love this summer casual look. I'd rock this strolling downtown to meet the girls for lunch. Very chic but still comfy.

Please, I have to know who makes those sandals!

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:44 AM | Unregistered CommenterJK

Weekend chic indeed! Rock-on Michelle! Oh, the Prez looks great also :0)

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:49 AM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

@Design that's quite possible, when I tried on, it came to little bit above my knees and I'm 5'7" .... also the store had 30% of sale (why I said it was $20)

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:46 AM | Registered CommenterStylishgurl

Really like her sandals! Do you know where they are from? Looks lovely!!

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 12:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarianne

I'm completely taken with the sandals also. The footbed looks closest to either a NAOT or a Mephisto. Birkenstocks would not have the double layer. But I checked this year's stock, and don't find that shoe. I'd love to know what it is!

Overall she looks summer cool. The sandals are a winner!

May we all keep rockin’ together!

Peace.

PS @ Jestina (London, England) - Loved your thoughts about the Tracy Feith wisteria dress.

PSS @ Charlene in Detroit - Your words to this community were beautiful.

Wow great casual look! I can see myself wearing something like this. I agree with fellow posters...sandal info. please!

Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 5:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterAdear

I think those sandals are Gentle Souls by Kenneth Cole. I couldn't find the exact style but the
souls and black straps are found on a variety of styles. They look very comfortable.

Great casual look for Mrs. Obama . . . I love the tote and the beautiful pop of green it adds to the ensemble . . . such a compliment to the blue top / dress!

Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 2:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterParker

Agree with you @Mrs sTAR -- there is much we can learn from each other about our varying backgrounds and cultures. @anar, sorry you felt disrespected and piled upon – there was much vehemence and some harshness toward you re the comments on that gorgeous Naeem Khan dress Mrs. O wore for the recent state dinner.

I think many reacted to explain that womanly body shapes in different cultures are celebrated, and that women today in general feel pride in and take inspiration from Mrs. Obama, not only in the way she dresses, but in the substance of who she is as a person, her purpose, her passions, what she says and how she carries herself. I certainly did not intend to over-react toward you or to disrespect you, and I have made follow-up comments to emphasize that in the referenced thread. Mrs. O looked fabulous in that dress, and it fit her beautifully. I don’t think it was a tight dress at all, and I’m sure she felt wonderful in it and comfortable wearing it. Of course, differences of opinion are to be expected, and hopefully voiced with politeness. Often the tone and intent of comments can be misconstrued in Internet conversations. Please accept my apologies for any offence you took at what I had to say, anar. I think Mrs. O looks so good in the pants she wears as well, and she is quite comfortable with her height too, which is also very admirable, as some tall women particularly in adolescence have a hard time towering over their peers.

Our Western culture does place too much emphasis I think on being very slim, or having a panic attack when you get older and begin gaining weight in your waist and hips. I say that because I’m experiencing that now, as my metabolism has slowed down and I have to pay closer attention to my eating habits, and start exercising more. Some would laugh at me, because I naturally have always been fairly fit and slim because I used to have a slow metabolism and I am small-boned. Actually, though, my hip bones have always been wide, and as I have recently begun to put on extra weight in middle age (as much as 145, when I was used to naturally with no thought to dieting ever -- weighing 125 and under my whole life), it mostly has seemed to settle in my hips and backside. Somewhat startling when you are not used to that kind of silhouette, and to not being able to fit in your pants. I think I should follow and take inspiration from Mrs. O’s example, by focusing on eating right, staying fit, learning what looks good on me and finding a comfort zone in my own skin. In no way am I saying Mrs. O is even close to being overweight. She is at her right weight and she has a gorgeous womanly shape. Some women might feel the need to lose weight in her position, even when they are not overweight!

If disagreements can lead to deeper understanding, that is a good thing.

@flotusrocks: Thank you for your comment. I understand that some things get lost in translation. I didn't mean to offend anyone so I am sorry if it was interpreted that way. I am sure we can all learn a lot from each other while we bond over learning from the first lady.

Hope you have a great Sunday. It's sunny here in San Francisco after weeks of raining. Maybe I will go for a workout to take a note from Mrs. O and Move!

I love our First Lady in all that she wears, she is elegant!! I am thankful she wears some clothes that I can afford to wear and look elegant in some of them. Thank you Mrs. First Lady

@ Terri Austin - thanks for the compliment

@flotusrocks - You summed exactly how I felt when I first saw the Tracy Feith dress.

I like this top. I haven't been in Gap for years. Their stores always seem to be on sale lately and the displays are often so dull that they never inspire me to walk in and take a peek. Gap used to be one of my favourite stores for picking up weekend essentials. I really like this top/dress and gives me a lot of ideas for how I intend to dress this summer.

Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 4:51 PM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

This goes to show us that it does not have to cost an arm and a leg to look well put together. This is so achievable and who would know how much it costs. Someone stated you can also get this look by shopping in the junior section for a dress and then making it into a top, I never would've thought of that! Our Michelle sure knows how to inspire us! This is a cool summertime look.
I hope that they enjoyed the weekend away.
PS @ Terri, thanks so much dear.
PSS.....Where IS my NYON? WE miss you girl!

This is a fashion blog, let's not get into long winded explanations about interpretations and misunderstandings about simple opinions regarding fashion. It's just clothes. Everyone just relax and enjoy! We are all here because we love to look at Mrs. O and her choices.

Love this weekend chic look. I'm 5'10" and often shop in Juniors or Misses for tops that they sell as dresses (waaaay too short) and I wear as tunics. It's a good way to get the latest styles & trends for low cost. FLOTUS knows the deal!

Monday, June 13, 2011 at 9:47 AM | Registered CommenterBSewingLady

Cool! I just ordered it in a small (my size), all they had left. Can't believe I'll be able to wear the same dress/tunic as Mrs. O.

To all who mentioned the Junior tip on turning dress to tunic THANKS A MILLION. There is a wealth of fashion tips/info. to be used from this blog. Thanks again.

I agree that her sandals look like Gentle Souls, after looking at their website, the soles are identical and the whole line of shoes looks veeerry comfortable. That particular style of sandal I think originated with Birkenstock ( flip flop style, no heel strap). My daughter wore them when we went to Europe last summer and it seemed like half of our fellow tourists were wearing them too.

@marcelle..thanks for the heads up on the black dress and jacket. Did you notice Mrs. O's red high heels with that? Very chic, indeed!

Monday, June 13, 2011 at 6:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterChar

I glanced at the gap tunic/dress while I was at work. I intended to order one when I got home. Now the item is out of stock. It has to be because of the FLOTUS. Thank you Ms Obama for occasionally wearing something that all of us can afford. Also thanks for giving us the idea of hemming up a dress to make a fab tuinic.

Sorry for those bored or offended by my longwinded comments. Certainly this is a fashion blog, but as both Kate Betts and Mrs. T have attested in their excellent books, Mrs. O is about so much more than just fashion. In truth, I come here not just to see what Mrs. O is wearing, but also to learn about what she is doing as First Lady. Peace all.

I was browsing on google and found this website, love it very much, I have the dress to this top, I saw it yesterdayand said to myself wow...i have the same thing I bought mine on clearance 9.99 and at first I didnt like it but since I have seen it on Mrs. O, I will wear it....great style.

Someone said that Mrs. Obama's very attractive tote handbag is Lambertson Truex. I thought that this brand went bankrupt several years ago. When I searched for it, nothing came up like it disappeared. Am I wrong?

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 7:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Julie, I heard that the Lambertson Truex brand was purchaed by Tiffany, the jewelry company. However, I don't see any handbags online so you may have to check with one of their stores.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 10:44 AM | Unregistered CommenterChar

@Julie, I searched Google and found a number of Lambertson Truex hits. Here's a link to information that updates what is happening with this company/ brand:

I think her sandals are probably celine or chloe- would still love to know if anyone could find the exact ones!

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 6:12 PM | Unregistered Commenterb

@Julie - I believe the bag is "vintage" Lambertson Truex, purchased several years ago by the First Lady through ikram.
