Happy Weekend

Image by Jim Watson / Getty Images

The First Lady greeted the President as he exited Marine One at the White House this afternoon. Arriving back in Washington, the President had a treat for Mrs. O -- a pair of new garden gloves picked up at Fred's Pro Hardware in Toledo, Ohio. On a fashion note, some may recognize Mrs. O's Suno tunic from Summer 2009 here.

It was a busy day for the First Lady, as Mrs. O also delivered the commencement address at Quantico Middle and High School on the Quantico Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia. For the event, Mrs. O wore a sleeveless navy dress, adorned with fabric rosettes. Cute!

The love between Mr. & Mrs. O lifts my spirit. How fortunate we all are to see this on a regular basis. This is something that cannot be manufactured, and I can't imagine better role models for all of us. Go Obamas!

I love this picture of the POTUS and FLOTUS. Not for the fashion but for the way it reflects their relationship.

What a delightful picture of the First Couple! Wishing them continued happiness to them both, whatever the next eighteen months may bring.

The support and stabiliity that the love of his wife and family offer the President is what, I think, enables him to deal with the continuous nonesense that emanates from the Rethugs. The love and closeness reflected in this picture cannot be manufactured or contrived for the media. It is real. Now, the thoughtfulness of him personally buying those gloves and then delivering them to her, speaks volumes. Now that's family values in action.

Mrs. O is going on an official state visit to African at the end of the month! And she's taking the girls. That should be both substantively and fashionably fantastic!

You all who have posted before me are absolutely right...they love each other without a doubt.
May they be forever happy!

Love the greeting and the sweet presentation of gloves, the service and inspiration to students, the really cute dress, the gift they are to each other. Mr. and Mrs. O are a constant fountain of energy and excitement, a lesson in love and grace. I feel so lucky to witness it all. Thank you, Mrs. T!!

Is anyone grinning and cheesing hard at the first picture ? - I am. The President and First Lady exude warmth and love wherever they go and it is so infectious. Did anyone see how much grinning both the Queen and Prince Phillip did a few weeks ago. I tell you, I'm British born and bred and can count on one hand the amount of times I have seen her grin, smile and REALLY MEAN IT. She's a serious woman for sure and is very much aware of her role and the fact that she was born into it. It makes me chuckle, when I saw how much she let her guard down but who can blame her.

There was a beautiful article in the Sunday Times magazine today talking about Michelle Obama being a TRUE role model. The list went on and on and I can only agree. This girl kept focused, did well in school, got a great job and mentored a future President. On top of her first lady role, she still manages to mentor and inspire future generations (the two of them do) in showing people how love can grow and grow. Muah !

That is such a sweet picture of our President gifting FLOTUS with neon green gloves.....awwww, he shouldn't have! Vey sweet couple indeed.
I sure would like to see more of the dress from the commencent. I like how those rosettes frames our Michelle's face and neckline.

@ Jestina, you and a few of your fellow Brits, always have the kindest things to say about our First Family. It is so refreshing to read comments like that from across the pond. I cannot forget my girl Posh Tater and EnglishObserver, as well. Thanks guys!

When your husband is very, very busy and he remembers to buy you a pair of garden gloves! It says he is never too busy to think of you. Charming picture.

The dress with the rosettes looks super cute! Love FLOTUS greeting PBO and getting her gloves. Really sweet and thoughtful of the president to remember to get the First Lady gloves.

Jestina - I had to smile at your last post. I think a courtier was once asked about the Queen's priorities & he responded, 'dogs, horses, people'. Had her horse won the Derby yesterday we would probably have seen another proper smile. (Apparently in private, though, she has a wry sense of humour, laughs at herself a lot and is a great mimic.)

Anyway, for the record, part of the enjoyment of visiting this blog is the posters who contribute. Have a good week everyone!

@ English Observer - If the Queen's horse won on Saturday, we'd all be enjoying a day off work today !!

@ Charlene in Detroit - Thanks for the comments.

I agree with everyone's comment with regard to the First Couple's love, adoration, and affection for and towards each other. I would love to see more of that outfit worn to the commencement exercise; it looks llike it's very lovely.

@ Jestina, to answer your question regarding the "grinning and cheesing 'hard'?"; yes, I am! :0)

FYI:
Tuesday: The President and First Lady will host German Chancellor Angela Merkel for an official visit at the White House. Chancellor Merkel’s visit will include an official arrival ceremony, a bilateral meeting and a press conference with the two leaders.

In the evening, the Obamas will host a state dinner for Merkel and her husband, Dr Joachim Sauer. During the dinner ceremonies, President Obama will present Merkel with the 2010 Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Merkel was bestowed the award last year but was unable to attend the ceremony at the White House.

Newsweek has a fantastic article about the FL. It is quite insightful. I MUST repeat myself. She is truly a remarkable woman. PBO, U.S.A. and by extension the rest of the world are better for her being on the planet and moreso at this time. ENJOY!! http://www.newsweek.com/2011/06/05/michelle-obama-white-house-rebel.html

Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:26 PM | Unregistered Commenterriver rush

@ Trinisamba,

There are quite a few discrepancies in the article; and there is also a negative/bias undertone to the verbiage used by the writer. It wasn't a good "read" for me.

Monday, June 6, 2011 at 4:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterSoccerNana

@soccernana What discrepancies can you point to in the Newsweek piece? It documents how the First Lady has carved out her own strong position from a traditionally quite-confining role. It's a classic pros and cons / peaks and valleys profile, but the impression it conveys of Mrs. Obama is favorable.

Love the tunic in that first pic--so perfect for a summer evening!

In other news. Michelle and the girls had a weekend in Chicago May 27-29. All undetected by the press until after they left. A Nesbitt son graduation and a bar mitzvah for Malia's friend.Good for them.

An upcoming event that came up in a comment on Politico from one of the usual chronic complainers that "this week she goes to Beverly Hills." Hadn't heard about that so I did a search. Finally found articles in LA Times and Variety. June 13, a forum in the morning (PT) about military families.

On the 14th President Obama will be traveling to Puerto Rico. Wondered if Michelle might go, but I guess this answers that.

A bit of speculation. In this week's WH guidance for Friday it was noted that details would be given during the week. Perhaps a family outing to a national park? They've done one each year so far and none yet this year.

I could easily be wrong..

@ Sharon Nelson - thanks for the detective work. We'll have to see...

Totally agree that it was lovely Mrs. O and her girls could have an 'invisible' weekend in Chicago!

Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 2:43 AM | Registered CommenterEnglish Observer

@Astorian I liked the Newsweek article. They may have corrected it by now, but when I read it they had Michelle's mother's name as Miriam. The wives fussing about being invited in alpha order was just petty. But, all in all, I think it was a positive article. The picture of Mrs. O was fabulous!

Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 8:55 AM | Registered Commenterisonprize

I wonder if this was like the time he bought flowers for her and she saw it on the news before he got home? Remember that? She said she had to look all "Oh! White roses! What a lovely surprise!" Then again, this could be just a giggly moment. Whatever - they are reeeeeeally cute together and I love seeing it.

Yes Jestina I did think that we'd seen the Queen ACTually laugh in public, and smile, several times with the Obamas. Doesn't happen a lot! I don't know why "taking your role seriously" means "not laughing in public" for her - I personally think it's silly to try and look like you're less than human, it creates false expectations), but it was lovely to see The Queen enjoying herself.

Lovely outfits, both.

Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 9:25 AM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

@Astorian, there are too many to list here; however, Isonprize pointed out a small important one regarding Mrs. Marian Robinson's first name, which as of this posting has not been corrected in the online article.

I'll list two more: (1) "Her first chief of staff had little management experience and was gone after a few months, after she and social secretary Desiree Rogers locked horns." The TRUTH is Jackie Norris left to take a position as senior adviser to the Corporation for National and Community Service. (2) "Rogers, a glamorous Chicago acquaintance, was eventually canned when her profile became higher than the first lady’s—never a good idea." Ms. Rogers left a few months earlier than her initial plans of being in the job for 18 months; although the State Dinner mishap may have had a role in her leaving earlier than initially planned, it had nothing to do with "a higher profile than the First Lady". Mrs. Obama and Ms. Rogers are long-time friends.

My Lord, while the Newsweek article was overall a favorable portrait on Mrs. O, it did have a "journalistic speak" undertone (par for the course). What I found quite ridiculous were the self-absorbed comments by an unidentified "congressman's wife." (Obviously, not necessarily what the writer thinks, but what editorially was chosen to share).

In the NW article, the congressman's wife said that during a WH luncheon with congressional wives, they were seated alphabetically. So what?! Then the congressional wife indicated that she "barely spoke to Mrs.O." Again, so what?! What does that mean anyway? Did the wife think she deserved to sit at Mrs. O's table and shoot the breeze? If Mrs. O has more of a passion to reach out to inner city public school children than a need to suck up and pander to congressional wives, I say, "Right On!" What hooey for the congressional wife to claim she found Laura Bush "warmer" and more engaging because LB took the wives up to the Lincoln bedroom and posed for pics with each individually. Again, SO WHAT?! Nothing wrong with LB doing that, and very kind/ politically correct of her to do so, but why does the cw use it as some kind of "warmth" comparison? Whined the congressional wife, "Laura Bush treated us like she was showing us her home." Well, newsflash, unidentified cw, Mrs. O does not think of the White House as her exclusive home to show off to political insiders. Mrs. O has expressed and demonstrated that she views the White House as the home of the American people.

That photo accompanying the Newsweek piece is one of the prettiest I've ever seen. It really captures all the amazing qualities of our First Lady and I see a lot of Sasha in her eyes. GORGEOUS.

Can't wait to see what Mrs. O will be wearing tonight at the State Dinner!!
