Best of 2012: Gowns

The end of the year offers the opportunity to look back at the First Lady's standout fashion moments from the twelve months prior. This year I've divided my top picks into two categories: gowns and everything else. (Let's be honest, there's nothing quite like a ball gown!) Below you'll find a short list of my picks for Mrs. O's best gowns from 2012, as well as a poll. Dress, suits and such follow in a post below. Collectively we can declare the best of the year. Polls will remain open for three days. Happy Voting!

January 14, 2012: BET Honors - J. Mendel

February 28, 2012: US Armed Forces Dinner - Jason Wu

February 26, 2012: Governors' Dinner - Naeem Khan

March 14, 2012: White House State Dinner - Marchesa

April 28, 2012: White House Correspondents' Dinner - Naeem Khan

June 13, 2012: Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony - Michael Kors

December 2, 2012: Kennedy Center Honors - Michael Kors

My favs are the Marchesa white w/sequins ball gown -- to die for and the gown she wore to the correspondents dinner by Naeem Khan.

Mrs. O looks stunning in every gown. Not a miss among them. I voted for the Naeem Khan (April 28) because Mrs. O opened the door to a somewhat less predictable dress, because the cut is superb and the colours incredibly complimentary. I also love the hair style as well as the earrings.

I'm really surprised that the Michael Kors gown from Kennedy Center Honors isn't higher-- it's probably one of my five top favorites of all her clothing-- it fit beautifully, unlike some of the others, and was totally flattering, and distinctive.

All of these gowns are exquisite. However, I had to make a decision so I voted for the Naeem Khan with the sequins, beading and chiffon shoulder-bow. However, I was torn between that and the silk-print Naeem Khan, the one-shouldered silk J. Mendel and both of the stunning Michael Kors dresses. Certain designers seem to really "get" Mrs. O's sense of style and her body as well. Naeem Khan, J. Mendel and Michael Kors among others have elevated the First Lady's style to new heights! Here's to 2013 and beyond!

I hope Mrs. O wears Naeem Khan for the inauguration this year. She absolutely looks the best his designs.

Oops! I voted for the wrong Michael Kors - meant to select the black gown, but clicked on the gold one instead. I would have chosen the red J. Mendel gown but it didn't fit her as well as the others. Kors knows how to create both gowns and other clothing that fit her beautifully.

Ok, I vote for the WH correspondents' dinner Naeem Khan. I was torn with the other Naeem Khan Gov. ball gown, but since I recall we never saw that gown full lenghth...at any rate I think the Naeem Khan gowns just flatters her figure well and brings a non-traditional look for First Lady looks when it comes to formal affairs.

REALLY difficult to make a choice - in truth, I Can't (even though, in my voting, I chose the very last gown, for the Kennedy Honors)! I do happen to think that All the gowns fit Mrs. O Beautifully (she is a Gorgeous woman, unafraid to show off some womanly curves) and I Especially like her in Golden hues & in clothes that Sparkle w/sequins. But really, there is No gown I can think of, this year or in years past, that has Not flattered her! That royal blue gown is Especially very Gorgeous, color wise & in every way, too! I also enjoy that Mrs. O will pair her lovely gowns w/Stunning jewelry! She is not afraid of bold & fun jewels & she gives every Jeweled trend an Elegant, Timeless quality. Really, with a First Lady like Michell Obama - MUST we chose? The gowns are ALL Awesome & I'd be Happy to look at Pages & Pages More of her gowns & dresses! There is a Fairytale aspect to her gowns, but she always looks liker Herself & not a fashion mannequin. In other words SHE wears the gowns - not the other way around. What More can we ask of a First Lady in a ball gown???

All beautiful gowns, but the Jason Wu is my favorite.
Soft, feminine, breezy, all around gorgeous and without fuss! Simply stunning! The striking, bold intricate earrings, hair and make-up finish off so beautifully this fantastic and classic look on our magnificent First Lady.
A look that will stand the test of time and will elicit smiles of pleasure for generations to come.

I love all, but the blue Marchesa gets my nod! I love its gorgeous midnight blue hue with the magnificent detailing on the top. Anyway blue is my fav color.

I agree how could the Michael Kors black sequin skirt and black sweater be left out. It was the most beautiful for 2012 and she was simply stunning in it. I love it so much that I have purchased fabric (in red though) so that I can have the same outfit made for a ball I will attend in the future.

Both the Vera Wang gown and the Michael Kors black sequin skirt with sweater were from 2011 - that's why they're not included.
