A Grand Welcome

Image by Jim Young / Reuters

The much anticipated state dinner festivities have begun! The president and first lady welcomed Mexican President Felipe Calderon and First Lady Margarita Zavala to the White House with an outdoor arrival ceremony earlier today.

First Lady Mrs. O dressed in a classic raspberry coat and dress (confirming designer), paired with a statement bib necklace and black pewter heels. The turquoise and orange flecks of color in the necklace certainly pop against the pink dress - gorgeous!

The first ladies later visited New Hampshire Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, which was awarded the USDA's Healthier US School Challenge Silver Award in 2009. Note Mrs. O's change to orange-gold flats!

Update #1: Mrs. O wears a carmine viscose jersey dress with carmine silk nylon coat from Calvin Klein Collection, Pre-Spring 2010.

Update #2: Mrs. O wears a necklace by Erickson Beamon.

Smartly Dressed

The first lady attended the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. today, where she posed the final round of questions to contestants. While there, Mrs. O announced that the White House would host a Science Fair for students from around the country. The New York Times has the full scoop, here.

Style wise, the first lady turned to a minimalist grey pant suit, paired with silver ballet flats and an oversize pin at the shoulder.

Update #1: Mrs. O's light grey silk/wool suit is a Narciso Rodriguez creation. No word quite yet on the absolutely splendid brooch.

Update #2: Mrs. O's brooch is an Erickson Beamon creation. Fabulous!

Super Tuesday

Tuesday marks the official launch of the First Lady's campaign against childhood obesity, and it seems Mrs. O media appearances will abound.

Per Lynn Sweet of Daily Flotus:

Mrs. Obama's East Wing said she will be "joined by members of the president's cabinet, as well as media, sports, entertainment, and business leaders," plus mayors, member of the medical community and others at the White House event. On Tuesday evening, Mrs. Obama will sit down with CNN's Larry King for an interview about obesity and her first year as first lady. She will take questions from viewers.

Additionally, Mrs. O will appear on Good Morning America, a first peek of which we have here:

On a style note, the first lady is wearing an ivory double face wool sheath dress and jacket from Talbots for her interview with Robin Roberts. Mrs. O first wore the dress in November for a White House classical music event, seen here. Completing the ensemble is a pair of knee high boots in camel.

Update #1: Mrs. O's Super Tuesday is off and running! This morning the president signed a memorandum as part of Mrs. O's campaign to combat childhood obesity. The president and first lady were joined by Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in the Oval Office of the White House.

For the signing, Mrs. O wore a teal dress with printed top, paired wtih a coordinating teal cardigan. A statement brooch by Erickson Beamon completed look. See photo above.

Update #2: The first lady has just unveiled a new website for her campaign against childhood obesity, Let's Move. In the email introducing the website, Mrs. O writes:

"The problem is clear. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in this country have tripled. Today, obesity and excess weight threaten the health of one out of three American children. It’s time for us to act. That's why I’m asking you to be part of Let's Move! -- a nationwide effort to solve the obesity epidemic within one generation."

The site also includes this video from Mrs. O (wearing a J.Crew cardigan for the seated interview):

Honoring Justice Sotomayor

The President and First Lady hosted a reception at the White House this afternoon honoring the newly sworn in Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Mrs. O wore an ensemble we've seen once before, when the first lady toured the gardens at 10 Downing with Sarah Brown in mid-June, seen here. Mrs. O topped her ivory and black patterned dress with a turquoise cardigan, embellishing the look with turquoise accessories. The turquoise starburst brooch is the same Erickson Beamon piece first seen during the Democratic National Convention last August. A stack of turquoise and pearl beaded bracelets completed the look.

We don't yet know the designer of Mrs. O's dress, but hope to have an update soon! Update: Mrs. O wears a black dot twist front tank with eyelash trim, paired with a black embroidered dot micro-pleated skirt, both by Jason Wu.
