Print at the Polls

Image by John Gress / Reuters Pictures

The first lady is on the move again today, visiting the Early Voting Polling Place in Chicago. For the appearance, Mrs. O paired a multi-print top with a cornflower blue cardigan and black trousers, cinched at the waist with one of her signature oversize belts.

Everything but the belt...

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 2:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterGeorgia

Nope!

This doesn't work. The belt doesn't go with the outfit. It cuts her body in a weird shape (funnily that same belt looked great with the chartreuse/blue combo we saw in Travelers & just yesterday sans belt). The blue sweater doesn't need to cover the statement blouse.

To me, this outfit is a fail.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 2:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterMica

Yes, she looks fantastic but the belt is tight and maybe too wide for the look.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterSilver Pearls

How can this outfit be comfortable? The belt looks terribly tight, almost like a girdle. And the whole look is just very mismatched. Sorry.

It would have been fine if she had just left off the belt.

P.S. I''m not a hater. So please don't accuse me being one.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrace

The belt is not something I would wear, but I think she wears it well.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:37 PM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

Wow, what' s up with Mrs O hairstyle lately. It looks so awful ! I don't get her BELT too.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:46 PM | Registered CommenterNic John

Good example to set reminding people about early voting if they have it.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterlisa

I love First Lady Obama hair style...but don't like the belt she is wearing.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 4:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterTia

@ nic john,

I don't "get" why you visit and post on a site dedicated to this fantastic woman; a woman you do not like. I don't believe your gender is male. You go as far as to post under various names to make ugly statements. What is it? Do you need a hug?

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 4:40 PM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

Just when we thought her belt phase was a thing of the past, they're back!! The super wide belts appear to be her security blanket. They're like an outer girdle, like someone else already said.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 5:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterGayle

I like the belt with this outfit.
Her hair is fine!

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 5:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterAM

The belt definitely is not working here. It looks like it is simply too wide to fit on her waist and look comfortable and flattering. I love the patterned shirt and blue cardi over it - very cute. I agree with many others - would've looked great without the belt.

Alas, we all have days where we aren't quite as well put-together as we intended. But it's fun to see Mrs. O out on the campaign trail again!

FLOTUS looks beautiful. I will be voting early too!! I am happy she has decided to join the hubby, and the Veep on the road. Also, I love her cardigan.

Full view in Denver Post without belt and a jacket.

I don't have any issue with how the main pic looks - my first thought was "my god what a silhouette" but I definitely prefer the more relaxed look in the photo Sharon Nelson has linked to. i also liked the top that the lady on the right is wearing. That's wonderful!

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 6:17 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

The outfit is fine except for the oversized belt.

lLOVE MRS OBAMA TOP HER BELT IS NICE

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 7:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterMISS BAKER

Hey we all make mistakes, not every outfit is perfect! Take this outfit for example, the belt looks ridiculous.
It scrunches up a beautiful little cardigan and looks so tight and uncomfortably wide. Without the belt it would have been ok.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 7:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterGail

Well, that belt...is that why she took it off later on in the day? Way to tight.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 8:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterAdear

Also just discovered on that Denver Post page a link to a 23 picture slideshow of that event. Nice pictures and includes a closeup of the lady on the right. Also one of TBG looking very pleased with the First Lady. Also saw that when she was greeting people after the event in Milwaukee--very excited people, very warm First Lady, very pleased TBG.

If anyone is interested, C-Span will air a Chicago event after the debates tonight--about midnight ET. Last night they showed the Milwaukee event and then again around noon today, so perhaps this will be aired again tomorrow.

Debates have been interesting--up to 4 each evening. Very conservative Marcy Kaptur of Ohio just gave a wonderful defense of the health care bill. This has been the trend among Democrats in the debates despite the fact that the GOP says they are running from it.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 8:34 PM | Registered CommenterSharon Nelson

Not a fan of the belt and I did not care for the jacket she had on over the sweater. I like the blue color on her though. But overall, this is a miss.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 12:52 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

I like that she has got her own style and does not dress to please. She is comfortable in her own skin and her clothes so those shifting in their's on her behalf, sorry, life's just terribly unfair ain't it? U go Michelle, belts or not, u always look fabulous. I don't have to be able to where what she is wearing to appreciate her style.

@nic John u must be such a bitter person to never ever see any good, we do recognise ur different names. Bitter people miss out on so much, and u know where they end? Totally depressed.

I love the belt, just not with that outfit. The blouse is gorgeous and I love how the cardi picks up the blue tones in it. As for the hair, love love love it. It looks bouncy and healthy. If she wears a wig
(and personally I don't care) then she wears a wig very well indeed.

I am really waiting for her to wear the lilac two piece suit (Isaac Mirzahi ??) that she wore to the museum in New York. That outfit looked beautiful on her.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 5:28 AM | Unregistered CommenterJestina (England)

Yikes! She sure looks thin. Hope she is taking good care of herself.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 8:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterJulia

Well, I'm a belt girl, so no surprises here that I like it. I think I would've liked if the blue sweater if it were the same lenghth as that colorful top, yet it's good. I tried to stay up late for the C-Span re-runs of the debates, but I missed it. I'm going to look for them today, thanks Sharon Nelson for the info.

and trim enough
to wear that belt
she can carry it off
i could not

such a wow doll/c

I prefer the cornflower blue cardigan with the top than the jacket shown in the Denver posting. The cardigan complements the blouse more. Overall, she looks fine.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 11:43 AM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

MRS. O CAN TAKE ANY DAY - and swirl them into ribbons of determination, accomplishments, change lives, (loves challenges) look absolutely gorgeous IMO - yes the unstoppable Mrs. O,
born a winner and a leader.......and ribbons of happiness for any one who is LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE AROUND HER OR LOVE HER.

Love her in fuchsia.

I looove this look with the belt. I saw both pictures online and I must say her waistline looks amazing with that beautiful belt! I often visit this site, but am just now starting to post. I think that the colors are put together beautifully and in an interesting way! I also really admire that she is showing women all over the world how to change up pieces for different events...changing from a cardi to a jacket...genius!

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 11:52 AM | Unregistered CommenterLodovica

Please Nic John! I agree that if you're just on this blog to get out your frustrations, there are many other avenues you could pursue. Also, take an English class, please! If you're asking a question, then end it with a question mark. And it's not "I don't get her belt too," it's "I don't get her belt either." Why can't people who post to this blog simply run a grammar and spelling check before publishing their (in this case) rant. We're supposed to be educated, aren't we?

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 12:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoanneStelling

Nice, candid shot! Clearly Mrs. O is as pleased to see the early voter as is she to see Mrs. O! It's nice to see Mrs. O a bit 'on the trail.' Brings back campaign memories.

Love Mrs. O. Like the outfit, love her 'do, but a more elastic, loser belt would had looked better, I think. It's a little stiff and encasing.

But let me tell you: Mrs. O is looking fitter than ever (as if that were even possible).

Isn't my favorite outfit but she looks cute. I love her hair.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 4:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

You guys have read my posts and how much I love Mrs O. When I originally saw these pics on Daylife I thought she just phoned this one in. I thought that perhaps I had gotten it wrong and she was at one of her Let's Move events with the kids, it looked so washed out and blah. I must say though after looking at the pictures on the Denver Post link (thanks Sharon Nelson), the outfit grew on me. It made so much more sense. While I would have enjoyed a pop of color, which I got earlier with the Chicago stop, I began understand the casualness of the event and the attire. She cannot do sheaths and pencil skirts for every occasion, she would begin to look like the wooden dolls that pass for political wives that we know and loathe.
I also understand the permutations of the hairstyles that we have seen (the shoulder length, the bob, the updo). I'm keeping an open mind to the growing out of her hair. I keep my hair in twists or braids and am loathe to comment on anyone else's.
OK, off my soapbox and back to regular scheduled adulation and cyberstalking.

Friday, October 15, 2010 at 10:44 PM | Registered CommenterAnagrom

I saw the video. I must admit that Mrs O can carry this off because she is tall. It is not as flattering together. I do like each piece. It just looks a bit too tight and the back of the sweater hits just a bit to high and is puckered and would not be flattering on anyone. I like wide belts and wer them alot and I always try to have the swater hit at just the right length.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 10:51 AM | Unregistered CommenterJudy

I have to agree with several other posters that the belt just doesn't seem appropriate with that outfit. It seems sometimes that she is on overload with the wide belts, the odd-colored shoes, the outsize jewelry. Yet at other times, she looks well dressed and stylish.

Of course, if she likes it, that's OK but it should not be surprising when opposite viewpoints are made. She is really not a fashion icon and sometimes wears things that don't seem appropriate to the occasion or the purpose.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterEdie

Belt makes her shoulders look oddly large and rounded -- belt over this sweater is just weird. She needs to look in a full-length mirror b4 going out, also REALLY needs a stylist, as she CAN look amazing sometimes.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterScotty

I like the outfit but the best is not attractive. The sweater and top are cute....but just my opinion... the belt is awful.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 5:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterwatchingitall

I was surprised that she wore the casual poll-going outfit to fly to Denver and appear at a fundraiser luncheon in a private home. The jacket did not do it. Same pants, which looked rumpled at the polls.

The other women in the photo looked a notch higher up the "casual" scale. She has dressed to that level at similar events in the past. The J.Crew cardis, tops and skirts, etc.

We know she dresses to suit herself. Sometimes it works better than others, and that's what this blog is supposed to be about. Fashion. Style.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 6:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

Not my favorite look, but she remains fabulous. Looks like she is letting her hair grow long again, perhaps for the winter?

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 7:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHC

..and one more thing-who else dresses up to go vote? Yes, she is FLOTUS, but does she have to be flawless at every outing??

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 7:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHC

I love the belt. Think she looks so trim and wow w/the belt while without not as fashion-forward or figure flattering. How hard she works for all of us and how great she looks doing it! We're blessed to have such a classy, intelligent first couple.

Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 7:27 PM | Unregistered Commentermocro

I like her hair--it compliments her face, but every hairstyle she's had did the same. I really LOVE that she's brought the cardigan into style and uses them as jackets. The belt is simply too wide and the belt color takes away from the lovely blue sweater and great blouse. But i like the general business casual style of this look. I've copied it so much in my life!

Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 12:28 AM | Unregistered CommenterJanice

I do love this site and the info on FLOTUS but find it somewhat frustrating that other sites carry photos before you do. Today, Sunday 10/17, Obama Diary had photos of the Obamas in Cleveland where they are campaigning. She is wearing an awesome sweater that I would like to know about. Are there some technical issues that prevent you from getting photos early on? Please know that this is still the site I visit first.

Joanne and Rhona - THANK you.

Haters, you know, it's just boring, what you do..... It's not that subtle, the regulars and Mrs O lovers don't care about you or your point of view, we recognise your names and go "ohhhh yeah" and gloss over it.

What you say isn't even particuarly clever. Most of all, in case you think this is divine subliminal propoganda, here's the newsflash: just so you know, no-one is going to look at your posts and go "OH MY GOD. Everything that is wrong with America is IN THAT OUTFIT! I'll vote Republican..."

OK?

It's a CARDIGAN. That's all. Now, off you go and... I don't know.... shoot yourself in the foot or something. Anything would be wittier than what you're doing at the moment.

Edie, Mrs. O is a fashion icon. Period.

Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 8:32 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

I thought this was a fashion site. I am a true democrat and I love Mrs. Obama. I just wanted to comment on this outfit which is not her best and I feel if she was going to repeat one, she has others that look so much better and are more appropriate.

Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 9:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterJudy

Really?

Nic John, do take a spelling and grammar course. You are embarrassing yourself.

And Edie, that may be your opinion that Mrs. O is no style icon, but since you have proven time and again that you despise Mrs. O, people are probably not taking you seriously.

I just don't understand why these haters continue to post here - there are other websites that are dedicated to denigrating the Obamas. Why not post on those?

Monday, October 18, 2010 at 8:24 AM | Registered CommenterBevi

People are not haters because they critisize a look, it would be boring if everyone agreed. I love the Erdem blouse and I think the cardi is the same one I've been trying to find the maker of for ages, can anyone help? The belt makes it too busy.

Monday, October 18, 2010 at 9:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterAntigones Room

Antigones Room, is the blouse Erdem?

Monday, October 18, 2010 at 9:35 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

Ouch! That belt looks so uncomfortable and changes her body shape in a strange way. It's far too wide to be flattering. What about a narrower plain black belt around the hips?
