Coral and Pearl

AP Photo/Scott Sady

Long weekend hardly complete, the first lady was off again to Reno, Nevada today for an appearance at the 2010 Women's Summit, where she spoke to a crowd of 1600 businesswomen and dignitaries.

For the appearance, Mrs. O wore a coral cotton and silk crepe dress by Narciso Rodriguez, first seen when the Os travelled to Europe last summer, seen here. A double strand of pearls completed the summer look.

MRS OBAMA LOOKED GREAT WITH OUT THE JACKET AND BELT SHE WEAR LAST YEAR. LOVE HER SHOES.

Cute dress. It's nice to see it without the matching long coat on top.

It also looks like she pinned her favorite Garavelli broach to her pearls as seen in the photo below.

She looks lovely in this sundress. Beautiful color, good cut for her figure, accessorized perfectly. Lovely.

Only problem - it’s a sundress at a “conference for businesswomen and dignitaries “- she is showing too much skin for the event. Everyone else is dressed in business attire as you can see in the photos.

I know you'll say - 'she looks great' and 'she can wear what she likes'. True, true. But as great as she looks and as much right as she has to choose her own attire, she still doesn't seen to understand appropriate dress for the occasion.

I love to follow the young European Princesses (Letizia of Spain, Mary & Marie of Denmark, Maxima of The Netherlands etc). These lovely young ladies wear suits or business-type day dresses when the occasion calls for it. Perhaps they’re getting better advice.

Not my favorite color on her. Too washed out. I've said this before, she needs to stand up straight, her shoulders are usually rounded and hunched forward. It would improver her posture.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 8:56 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn

I've noticed many of her outfits are classic. They can go in the back of her closet and brought out years later, styles do come back. (Good investment - and ofcourse she's got young daughters). I like the fact that she chooses outfits that's perfect for her body type. Loverly.

The outfit that Mrs O wore to Moscow has to be my least favorite with the coat and belt. But without the coat, this dress is quite lovely and a wonderful color against her skin tone. Huffpost has a close up of the bodice which shows some nice detail. Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day holiday and as the First Lady has asked, let us find ways to help our veterans

@Lolly

Last time I checked MARIAN ROBINSON is Dr.O's mama, so she is the ONLY person who has/had any type of authority to tell Dr.O what is "appropriate" for her to wear or not. Gosh, I get sick of the old and boring police who think they have the ultimate guide to what a woman should wear, brings the women movement WAY back!

Mia Monte: Do you EVER have anything nice to say? While I don't agree with everything Lolly said, she has a right to say it (just like you), and I do have to agree that she was underdressed for the occasion. Always better to be overdressed than underdressed...that's what I've always heard.

I've been waiting to see some Memorial weekend attire.....it's so funny, when I see a new post, I get so excited! I just love watching her navigate her way through her time as our First Lady. She is doing it with such grace, humility gratitude and style. Oh and just a side note for all you fans, read Craig Robinson's book A Game of Character. It is wonderful and gives some wonderful brother in law insight to Michelle....and no surprise, Marion Robinson rocks!

Dear Lolly and Ann,
As I see it, you dears are getting rather close to the edge in your comments on this site. You may very well be the next to be smeared as I have been.
As for me, I haven't seen anything that MLRO has worn so far on this NV trip that is either interesting or appropriate.
On a very sad note.....After 40 years of marriage, 4 children, and the trials and tribulations of political life, Al and Tipper Gore have announced their separation and no doubt immanent divorce. What a shame.

On the other hand, wanna bet how many of the stuffily dressed female dignitaries saw her in this cute summer dress and wished they had done the same?? It is summer after all; to me a dress is almost more appropriate than a suit for just about any occasion.

@Lolly,

Ever so often you slink on to this site to voice your "love" of the European princesses while at the same time putting down the First Lady for what you deem as "appropriate". Well, I say to you, it's time for you to take a flying leap to hell. No one cares what you think, you offer any contructive information or insights, so if you don't think this First Lady have what it takes to please your so damn hghfalutin standards, just stay the hell away from this site. You won't be missed! Perhaps the European princesses will welcome you in their sphere (WHAT A JOKE!).

@ babs,

Point well-taken, I agree wholeheartedly. I wonder about those you complain about the First Lady wearing a sleeveless dress to an event in Nevada, where the temp has to be over 90 degrees at least. What's wrong with these people!

Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

Simplistic, stylishly savant is Mrs. Obama in this pretty colorful dress! I'm so glad that she's a First Lady that's stepped out of the elective status quo box when it comes to dressing! I welcome the days of periodically straying from the suits. Don't get me wrong, her suit selections are beautiful, yet dresses are my top favorites, and I really like her dress selections!

This color doesn't wash her out tonally. It accents her underlying, golden skin tone! Certain very pale warm and very pale cool hued colors would wash her out. Yet, even with the right pairings of bold, colorful accessories would make even those pale hued colors pop!

Lolly and Mia, before we get too into who is right with Lolly's comment (and for the record I think you both have valid points) I would like to offer some historic perspective. Jacqueline Kennedy was considered very much a rule breaker with her simple clean lines, bright one color A line dresses and remember at the Inauguration, her simple cloth coat trimmed in fur.
Most women at the time wore more ornate clothing (think Mamie and the 50's), fuller skirts and fur coats and hats. Jackie did not like fussy hats and asked that a simple one be designed, thus Halston's pill box. One could put Michelle in this category. Whether you agree with what she wears to which event is up to you but she definitely is someone getting our notice. Shelly

Sorry folks. On this occasion I have to side with Lolly. This looks like a casual dress you would throw on to run errands. While I'm aware this is probably not the best lit photograph that's in print, I'm sorry but I'd even have liked to see a plain little cardigan or shrug worn over this dress. Just something to give it a little more formality to suit the occasion.

I wish more women would take heed. The lack of a suit should not lessen a woman's power. Do women have to be boxed in manly suits to be taken seriously? Mrs. O anwers this with a bright and easy-breezy coral summer dress with an empire waist. The old guard will never be convinced, but to the young women of the world she is a prism for the light of their eyes.

What a lovely look for Mrs. O--so fresh and so flattering. I'll bet there was a collective "Aaaah" of pleasure when she took the stage.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 5:53 AM | Registered CommenterJMH

Lolly I follow the european princesses and most of them have adopted a more relaxed look with cardigans and a dress. They are rarely boxed in wearing a boring suit. Like Mrs O they wear dresses, they show their arms and sometimes they wear suits. I get tired of the appropriate police, it seems like they talk in code.

once again...she looks great, the color is perfect for her skintone and as usual, she has that Michelle Obama glow...love it.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 7:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterBrooksie

I will catch flack for that, but I agree with you Lolly. And as much as we like to kid ourselves that certain decorum does not apply to Mrs. O, it does. This is better suited (pun intended) to a summer picnic/outing than to give a speech at a conference. Warm weather notwithstanding, (we do have AC now, you know), sometimes, we do have to incovenience ouserlves and give up some of our comfort to accomodate others. Like Lolly said, the attendees made the extra effort to look professional, so even a little cardigan would have helped here. And the thing about being "appropriate," some posters knew exactly what Lolly meant and chose to take it to an extra level that was so not necessary.

She looks fine.

That said, the era of the "manly suit" is dead unless one chooses to wear that look. Mrs. Obama campaigned for her husband in "suits" - either skirt suits or pant suits - for over a year and no one said they looked "manly". Today's "suits" are feminine and classy.

There are times when showing less skin is a good look. Not necessarily in Nevada if it is warm.

do we think president obama should also wear hawaiian shirts, and not a long sleeved shirt and tie, to the next G8 summit? as a frequent hawaiian visitor, i've seen some beautiful, expensive prints that he could choose from. i'm sure it will reflect his heritage and hopefully not lessen his power or seriousness. will that make him also a prism for the light of our eyes?

i agree with lolly. mrs o looks lovely, but she should match her peers. she has proven she could wear interesting suits that show her individuality, so i don't think that a suit will hide her personality or style.

I liked this emsemble the first time Michelle wore it but I love the dress as it is worn today. Matchy jacket outfits work well if the garment underneath is plain. However, something as cute is this dress should be shown off to maximum effect, love the way it ruches in the front. The double strand of pearls gives the outfit the finishing touch. Home run for me.

I have often read on this site that if many of you had the chance to meet MLRO you would most certainly kick your ensemble and accessory selections and you grooming up a notch. Many of you would have "dressed to the nines." Here in the west, women dress appropriately for business every day....90° or not. I am not saying that appropriate has to be a "stuffy" (your word) women's suit, but a much better choice for this event would have been something more classic and sophisticated like the navy and white dot, and sleeveless, dress from last week. If the organizers of the event had known that MLRO was going to choose resort wear for this appearance, they may very well have mentioned in the registration materials, "Smart Casual Attire Recommended."

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered Commenterwanda

What makes Mrs. Obama so special is that she doesn't care about what people think about what she wears. She will continue to awe and inspire because of the "core" of who she is. While some people will try to "reduce" her shoulds, should nots and what's appropriate we all know at the end of the day that she's so much more than that.

Smalls minds criticize.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 3:55 PM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

Wanda and miss t, your comments were right on target. Ladies, no one said a word about wanting the FLOTUS to wear stuffy or manly suits, just that something that looked more professional would have been more appropriate for the event. How about that white pantsuit she wore in Mexico? Just saying.

I live on the West Coast. I know heat and how to dress for it. When the temps go up to 115 in the summer, we know there is a/c running and most of us do NOT wear sundresses "as they are" to the office or to events. If we are in sundresses or more informal sleeveless dresses we take cardigans with us year-round into the workplace to "dress them up" and keep the cold air off of us.

Heat isn't an excuse for looking like you just dashed in from the pool or the market when you are speaking at an event. This dress would have been a better choice for the Red Rock event with Harry Reid.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 4:03 PM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

I think she looks really pretty in this dress. I love the pearls and attached brooch. Perhaps it was a tad too informal but she is pretty and she is there to support women...more important than her dress, i think.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 4:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

@ Miss t,

Before you issue your defense of posters like Lolly maybe you should take the time to review what precipitated such a harsh response. I don't have a problem with anyone stating a valid reason(s) why they don't like a particular selection of the First Lady, but what I definitely will respond to is the incessant need by some to voice their so-called critique in derogatory, demeaning and insulting terms. So pardon my French, Oh, Hell No! (for you, Oh, Heck No!). Maybe you should be equally as democratic (that's with a small "d") by calling out those low-lifes who surf this site to occasionally spew their venom at this First Lady disguised as their humble commentary. As you should know, this site was created for people of differing perspectives on fashion to share their insights and constructive commentary as they relate to the First Lady's style. It certainly doesn't mean that it's open-season for all those who have a beef against the First Lady (and her husband) to use it as a safe zone where they can have free-reign in their hate. Think about it!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 6:10 PM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

I liked this outfit when our Michelle wore it last year with the Michael Kors coat and like it now. I'm not sure that I'd call it a sundress, but nontheless, it looks good with my favorite jewels: those pearls. In the pics from last year, I did not notice that bodice's material was different from the bottom of the dress.I just thought it was two different colors, it's nice. I really appreciate how FLOTUS rotates her outfits just like the rest of us, how she switches out her accessories just like we do. It shows me that we can use our imagination and think outside the box with our own wardrobes. It's fashion, it's supposed to be fun and pleasing to the wearer (first and foremost) and we can make it our own. We have so many choices. Not to be preachy, but it does not have to appeal to everyone....yet it does not have to be divisive either. Our dislike for anyone's outfit, hair, body shape or whatever, should NEVER translate as a character indictment. A little common courtesy and respect goes a long, long way!

This was a wonderful place to come, but it is being destroyed by Lolly and Nora and Wanda and nonpasseRAT and Nic John and nakajima and the Cincinatti Kid et al and and some of these split personalities who ONLY snarl when they have something to say. And as for Christen, she loves to jumps in and defend the trolls as if they need defending. Watch her snarl back at me. Wanda is vicious and ugly in her attacks. She has been here before under other names.

A lot of folks who had something to say about fashion are no longer here or they are not visiting regularly. What a shame

I'm sorry Mrs. T but this site is dying because these people have not been reigned in, in the name of free speech. They are ugly hateful people whose only reason for being is to turn the one decent and respectful site about the Os into a cesspool. Well, they are going to succeed or have succeeded but I won't be around to find out. I am deleting this site from my favorites and don't plan to visit again.
